We spent 5 days camping in Hat Creek at the beginning of June. We were pretty much smack in the middle between Mount Lassen and Burney Falls. Just north of Mt. Lassen, on State Route 89, we found an area called Subway Cave. It is a lava tube open to the public to explore. At one point lava flowed through this area, creating a long, dark cave. So we strapped on our headlights and jackets and took off! |

The rocks at the top were crawling with lizards doing push ups! |

There were no lights inside aside from the ones we brought. It was pretty dark! I was surprised the kids didn't freak out. It was nice and cool inside, too. |

A few miles further north on SR 89 we came across this creek. The water was too cool to play in, but it was beautiful. |
