Whatever Makes You Happy

Heero stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around his waist. After a thorough drying off, he slipped into his jeans and dropped the towel. A fine mist still hung in the air, reminiscent of his shower, and Heero was struck suddenly by a faint memory of something. He blinked in wonder, then shook his head and reached for his shirt which was still in the sink.

Then he glanced up.

A hazy figure of a person Heero nearly didn't recognize for a split second greeted him.

Then it hit him.

...you think you
deserve to die?...

Heero suddenly thought he saw himself laughing in the mirror. Anger welled up inside of him against himself, against who he had become after the war; against his heart for caring for someone whom he knew he couldn't love.

And that laughter...so strange and lilting. So foreign to him. Heero shook with rage.

Without a second thought, he cocked his arm and sent his fist full force into the mirror; shattering the merry face that was so like his own it frightened him.

Panting, barely feeling the sting of glass in his knuckles, Heero lowered his arm and looked down into the shattered remains of the mirror on his shirt.

He was staring at a reflection of his broken soul. It was like looking into a mirror.

Heero grinned briefly at that little bit of profound humor.

And then the door opened.

Movement caught his eye and he looked up into what was left of the shattered mirror to see...

"Duo?" Heero's brow furrowed as a vision of 'dream Duo' briefly flashed across his mind.

"Yes, Heero?" Duo swallowed hard and glanced first at his broken mirror...and then down at Heero's bleeding hand. "Jesus, Heero. You're bleeding."

Heero flexed his stiffening right hand and grimaced slightly in pain. Duo felt helpless at Heero's lack of reaction. Not knowing what else to do, he calmly walked through the mess on the tile and reached for Heero's arm.

Heero wheeled on him, an intensely captivated look in his eye.

Disturbed by Heero's behavior, Duo backed up a step. Heero calmly followed, eyes locked on Duo, until he had him pinned against the bathroom wall; one hand on either side of his head.

Duo was trapped. But he
liked this kind of trapped. It was strangely ... exciting.

He blinked as Heero edged closer.
