| Most people don't know much about bettas besides the common misbeliefs the petshop will tell, so it is my duty to inform you of the truth. Bettas are labyrinth fish meaning they breathe air from the surface of water unlike other fish that breathe through gills. With this ability to breathe air bettas can live in swampy areas where as other fish would not be able to breathe. Never put two male bettas together because bettas are territorial fish and will fight to the death. Don't put males and females together either unless you've done your homework and know exactly how the breeding prosess goes. Females can usually live together but some females are very territorial and will fight to the death just like males. So if you choose to keep your females together keep a close eye on them and separate immediatly if they start fighting. I have never been able to keep adult females together. A bettas home is his castle. Even though the people at the petshop may tell you that it's okay to put bettas in those tiny hexes or cups. it's really not okay unless there are water changes occuring every day to every other day. But for complete satisfaction you should keep them in at least a gallon of water. you will see a dramatic difference between a fish in a cup and a fish in a gallon or more bowl. Tanks should be longer than they are deep. The water quality is important too.with a bowl without a filter you're gonna build up ammonia pretty fast. Ammonia is a deadly toxin that, if the levels get too high, can cause death. That's why it's important to do weekly water changes. Always use dechlorinated water for your betta. Chlorine can kill!!! Adding salt (non-iodized) will help in preventing disease. You should try to maintain a temp. of at least 74 degrees F. Never leave the tank in direct sunlight, as it will over heat quickly leaving you with a dead fish:( You must feed your betta at least two times daily. I recommend and use HIKARI Betta Bio-Gold. It's an excellently formulated food. It is also a good idea to feed a variety of foods to maintain a healthy active fish. I feed whiteworms and freeze dried blood worms weekly as a special treat.
