"C'mon Jewel, you silly thing. Do you want Gremmy to beat you to the food again? Look, he's not even trying." I am not silly, Alhajath snapped into her mind, and that little bronze showoff will not beat me! With a tremendous effort, she gained a boost of speed and and slammed herself into the waiting bowl of meat. Her bonded hurried over and started feeding her, making sure that the tiny little white didn't choke on the overlarge chunks of meat. "Slowly Jewel, slowly," laughed Dalez. Her beautiful little hatchling, smaller by far than any of her siblings, often forgot about her tiny size and young age when a challenge was issued, much like she herself did. In fact, she and her bondmate had many things in common: belief in the abilities of others, refusal to back down from a challenge, no matter how ludicrous, and an overwhelming love for one another. That was the greatest and most important thing they shared. It would never waver, never break. It was there for all of eternity.
Smiling at that thought, she made sure Jewel had had her fill and left the rest, a considerable amount, to Lex and Gremmy. She then took the little white to the Weyr lake for a desperately-needed bath. When that was finished, the dragon settled on the warm sand and allowed her rider to oil some of the flaky patches she'd noticed earlier. She received a quiet humm of felief and pleasure for her efforts.
I'd like to speak with some of the others now if that's alright? asked Jewel of her rider. "Of course you can," she said. "I've got something I ought to work on anyway." At a curious inquiry she wagged her finger at the hatchling. "I can't tell, it's a surprise. Don't try and figure it out, just accept it and wait," she warned to forestall any further questions. Then they walked back to the weyrling barracks and Jewel joined a small group of her peers in a simple game. She, on the other hand, headed over to her bunk and pulled out a small bundle wrapped in silk. Calling for Lex and Gremmy, she got to work.
Can I open my eyes yet? asked Jewel impatiently as she stood with her eyes fully lidded and covered by one of her delicate wings. "Not quite yet dearest," soothed Dalez as she searched through her belongings. It was there, buried, that she had hidden her surprise. Finally finding it, she turned to the hatchling and said softly, "Alright...now." Jewel's eyes immediately flew open and widened. In her hands the young woman held a necklace the perfect size for the young white. From the length of golden chain hung a moonstone, one that shimmered and gleamed like her hide on a cloudless day with an overtone of milky white that gave it a gentle gloss. It was exquisitely crafted and fit exactly when hung 'round her neck. "As you grow," Dalez murmered, "we can add more links to the chain. You won't wear it everyday though, only on special occasions. Overcome with emotion at her rider's most recent show of love and devotion, she could only utter a very soft croon...but it still said all that needed to be said.
Dalez is from the wonderful World of Saya. Alhajath, the little Jewel, was hatched on the Sands of Andromeda Weyr.
