BATTLE BANNER
The tide of war rages, and the armies of warhammer rally under the battle banner
Warhammer on a shoe string  : Chaos
There is a constant complaint by warhammer players that the models are just too expensive. Dispite all the claims of best in business, best game, best quality, etc. I like to point to plastic figures done for the 1/35 scale military models as an example that models need not be expensive and yet be "best". Anyone who have dabbled in military modelling will know that brand names like Tamiya, Italeri or Dragon, etc produces authentic, to scale, quality and beautiful models, ranging from WWII King Tiger tanks to modern day M1A2 Abrams.
As the title of this article suggests, I will attempt to give cheaper and characterful alternatives to using models for Warhammer. Though the subject of discussion is Chaos, anyone can apply the same rules to the other Warhammer races. I must mention that I stay  at the low end of the supply chain, and GW models will usually travel halfway round the world to reach local dealers (Eg. UK->Australia->S'pore). As a result, prices are obscenely high due to the extra middle man and shipment costs.
CORE UNITS
Lets start with core units and some good ways I have found to represent these.
War Hounds
At 6 points each and being pewter models, War Hounds are a poor buy for the man on a budget. Fortunately, GW already has nice alternatives for them. The wolves from the plastic Goblin Wolf Riders set is excellent as alternative models. The Goblin Wolf Riders set comes with 10 wolves/hounds plus 10 little gobos as extras. This is an excellent buy. The gobo extras can always fit into the Chaos marauder regiments.
Chaos Knights
Chaos Knights are great models and a must have in the Chaos army. Being peweter models, their costs leaves much to be desired.
The models are easy to make at a lower cost. What you need is :
1. Empire Knights regiment set
2. Chaos Warriors regiment set
For the steeds, just use the steed from the Empire Knights.
The Chaos Knights can be made using the legs from the Empire knights and upper torso of the Chaos Warriors.

This conversion gives 8 Chaos Knights and 4 Chaos Warriors for less than actual pewter models.
