BATTLE BANNER
The tide of war rages, and the armies of warhammer rally under the battle banner
Reinforced Line - A close look uses for the reinforced line formation
unit B
Units 1 & 2 are locked in combat.

This time the line is reinforced by the general on a chariot. The chariot with its advantage of great charging distance stays 12" away from both front units. There is little to no risk of being caught by Units B & C sweeping from combat.
unit C
unit A
unit 1 unit 2
unit 3
Fig7. Units are locked in combat. Unit 3 assumes a reinforced role well behind the 2 front units
At this point due to the presence of the general within 12", two possible outcomes can occur
Outcome 1 : Units Hold
unit B
Units 1 & 2 manage to hold due to the general's high leadership.

Wasting no time, the general on chariot charges into the foray. With a charge range of 18",the chariot easily makes it into combat with Unit B. The charging attacks plus the high combat ability of the general ensures victory.

unit 3
Fig8. Units are locked in combat. Unit 3 counter charges
Outcome 2 : Unit2 Breaks
Units B & C breakthrough. They sweep forward but cannot reach Unit3. Unit 3 charges Unit B on its own turn.

The charging attacks plus the high combat ability of the general provides a high chance of defeating Unit B.

As can be seen, the reinforced line provides a backup to a formation in the defensive mode. The front units can also be presented as a lure for opponent charges, fleeing away from charges and allowing the reinforcing unit to counter charge.
Lets see and example.
