Units 1 & 2 are locked in combat and things are not going well for them. Unit 2 is overwhelmed by the combined might of units A & B.. The 1 valiantly holds the line.

unit A
Units B & C, having broken through,  sweeps forward but is short of reaching Unit 3.

Fig5. Unit B & C has swept forward but not enough to hit unit 3
Unit 3 charges forward to engage Unit B, gaining the advantage of charging. Unit C has to wait for its own turn to be able to charge Unit 3 on the flank. With the advantage of the charge, Unit 1 stands a chance of breaking Unit B, sweeping forward such that it is out to Unit C's charge arc.

Obviously the reinforcing unit (Unit 3) is most effective if it has long charge range and/or hitting power. Chariots, calvary and units led by heroes come to mind. This location is also ideally suited for the general since he will be in a central location where all front units can use his leadership.
