Reinforced Line - A close look uses for the reinforced line formation
Reinforced line, what does it mean?
A reinforced line is simply a line of units placed to the front, with units placed behind as well.
Figure 1, shows 3 units of spearmen, 2 of which are lined up in front facing the opponent and the 3rd unit placed a distance behind the 2 units. This is a centre reinforced line; the 3rd unit reinforcing the line created by the 2 front units. Similarly, the line can be reinforced more to the left or right by placing the 3rd unit behind the 1st or 2nd unit.

So what good does it do?
As the formation implies, the line is reinforced. When you reinforce something, you provide extra strength and resilience. Similarly, in a formation, you expect to add offensive and defence power to your line.
Like how?
The advantages will be more apparent if we look at a simple line formation engaged in fierce combat.
Units 1 to 3 are locked in combat and things are not going well for them. Unit C is a powerful unit that smashes through unit 3 in close combat. The other 2 units (1 & 2) valiantly holds the line.

Units C, having broken through wheels or reforms to prepare to sweep down the flank of the remaining defenders. The attackers have gained an advantage to the flank. There is little the defending units 1 & 2 can do. Even if the win their respective opponents in this round, they will have to take a charge from Unit C.

Lets re-run the above with a reinforced line....................cont
