Episode 6:  Van Horn to Guadalupe Mountains

Sunday morning we headed north from Van Horn to Guadalupe Mountains National Park.  It was about an hour drive up a scenic Texas road.  Passed by a couple of ranches, and very little else.  Missy thought it was cool that they could leave the ranch gates open and the cows wouldn't leave because of the metal grates at the threshold of the fence.  Apparently, however, cows have their ways and a few manage to escape!
During the drive, we saw two roadrunners and our first tumbleweeds!  (And at the campsite, we saw a jackrabbit!)

The park is basically a wilderness park, with a lot of hiking trails through and up the mountains.  We decided we had to do the most macho trail - the Guadalupe Peak trail, which leads to the highest point in Texas, around 6000'.  The trail is 8.8 miles up and back and takes mortal humans up to 8 hours.  But we did it in 6 and a half!  (And we're still sore a day later!)  There's a total elevation change of about 2600'.  It took us about four hours to get to the top.  Some very steep trails - and some completely awesome views!  These pictures do not do it justice.
This is the view from the bottom.  We forgot to take a picture before we started.  I know this one's a little dark.  This isn't actually Guadalupe Peak.  We thought it was when we started out.  But we climbed this one - then another behind it - then Guadalupe Peak was behind it!
