We are an independent organisation who strive to help orphans and
refugee children in the war torn region of Ambon, Maluku. This
organisation was formed in December 2000 and became incorporated in
2002.
Lawamena is an Ambonese word which means "Keep on
Moving". This particular word was chosen simply because we want
to look at the future of Ambon, when by God's will the violence that
started in 1999 ends. Lawamena is hoping to provide an opportunity
for children and orphans to have a proper education, to prevent a
loss of opportunities to this generation. The generation of children
at the age of primary school. This is a generation who has seen
killings happening right before their very eyes, and may have killed
to live. The generation who lives in refugee camps with only a thin,
sometimes leaking plastic roof, covering their heads.
The generation who stops going to school because mom and dad
are no longer there with them. The generation who has seen the lost
generation before them, the high school age children who went to
"war" and died. Should this young and new generation fade
too?
Through us twelve children are currently being sponsored. These are children who have
become refugees because of the violence, some of them have lost
their parents.
