Super Robot Wars ever since SRW 4 now has two modes. One is called Real Robot route and the other is Super Robot route. The big difference between the two is the fact that it determines your character's robot and it also determines what robots you may recieve later in the game. It also gives you different stages to go to. It is also the start where Banpresto entered its own mecha designs along with anime robots. When in this option you get to choose the gender of your pilot. Your pilot, if male has better power for both close and long range stats but are weaker in aiming and dodging, females are stronger in dodging and aiming abilities but are slightly weaker in power. The choice is yours although main characters are usually quite balanced compared to other pilots. Also to note the choice of male and female also affects your character's robot sometimes.
