| On June 5 1813 an invading United States army of about 3000 men, commanded by Brigader General John Chandler, camped in this vicinity. That evening some 700British regulars of the 8th and 49thRegiments, under the command ofLieutenant Colenel John Harvey. Lefttheir encampment on Burlington Heightsto attack the enemy. The assault waslaunched early the following morning under the cover of darkness. In the fierce an comfused fighting which followed, heavy losses were suffered on both sides. But the Americanswere defeated and withdrew after their twosenior officers Brigader Generals Chandler and Winder were captured. This victory is creditedwith preventing Upper canada from being overrun in 1813. Information provided by the Archealogical and Historical board of Ontario Are soldiers still fighting an endless was at this historic location? I did not have any reports directed at the field itself, although the house is beleived to be haunted by Mary Jones Gage. |
