History of Archaeological Dating

The exact origins of archaeological dating are not completely known. Many artifacts have been excavated, discovered, and antiqued for thousands of years, but it was not until the nineteenth century that a systematic method started to be used in order to determine how old an artifact was.

Britain was one of the first countries in the world to create a systematic approach to archaeology.

In America, Thomas Jefferson was responsible for supervising an archaeological excavation in Virginia on an old Indian burial mound.
Archaeology has been used for several thousand years. In England, archaeologists have found the layouts of medieval villages that were evacuated after the Bubonic Plague. In the 14th century, archaeologists discovered lost parterre gardens from the 17th century. In New York, archaeologists have discovered and removed the remains of an 18th century, Black burial ground.

Archaeological dating made it possible for archaeologists to determine how long artifacts or locations have been around.
