6-2-2: The CD-ROM refuses to run automatically under Windows 95/98 when a disc is inserted.
This may occur when the "auto insert notification" feature is enabled. In most cases, the trouble is caused by an incorrect value in the registry. To resolve this problem, use the registry editor to locate the following key: **(Remember to always back up your registry first !!)**
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun
Then modify the value for the "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" key to: 0000 95 00 00 00 ( or 0x95 in REGEDT32.exe). After you make this change, quit the rgistry editor and restart your PC. ( the "0" is a zero, not the letter o )

6-2-3: The system locks up while copying data fromthe CD-ROM under Windows 95/98.
When you are copying a large directory structure from a CD-ROM drive to a local hard disk, your computer may lock up. This problem may be caused by the CD-ROM "read-ahead" feature. The feature can cause the CD-ROM drive controller to be driven faster than it was designed to be. To prevent this problem, reduce the read-ahead cashing level for your CD-ROM:

6-2-7: Command Line Switches for MSCDEX.EXE ( Article # Q87165 )
The information in this article applies to:
SUMMARY
This article describes the command-line switches for Microsoft's CD-ROM
Extension, Mscdex.exe, versions 2.21, 2.22, and 2.95.
Mscdex.exe is available from CD-ROM vendors, with the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade, 6.2 Upgrade, and
6.21 Upgrade, and with Windows 95/98.
MORE INFORMATION
Mscdex.exe is a CD-ROM "redirector." It hooks into the MS-DOS or
Windows operating system the same way the network redirector does to obtain access to
files that are not on local hard or floppy disks. As far as MS-DOS or Windows is
concerned, CD-ROM drives look just like network drives. MSCDEX splices itself in front of
the network redirector and takes requests belonging to CD-ROM drives and passes the rest
to redirectors (such as network redirectors).
The following is the command line for MSCDEX.EXE:
MSCDEX.EXE: /D:x /M:n /E /V /L:x /S /K
The following table defines the MSCDEX.EXE command-line switches:
Switch Definition /D:<device name> - Allows you to specify a name for the device driver. This name must be identical to the device name used in the CONFIG.SYS file. /M:<n> - Specifies the number of sector buffers used to cache the path table of a CD-ROM disk. Typically, each drive should have a minimum of four to five buffers. The larger this number is, the less your computer will have to read directly from the CD-ROM drive. /E - Tells MSCDEX.EXE to use expanded memory if your system is using expanded memory. /V - Displays information on memory usage when you boot your PC. /L:<drive letter> - Allows you to specify the letter you want to assign to the first CD-ROM drive. /S - Allows the CD-ROM to be shared on MS-NET based systems. /K - Tells MSCDEX.EXE to use any KANJI (Japanese) file structures, if present, rather than the default of alphanumeric file structures.

The information in this article applies to:
SUMMARY
Many Windows-based programs are designed to start automatically from the StartUp
folder (the Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp folder) when you start your computer.
Under some conditions, it may be useful to prevent programs from starting automatically.
For example you may want to prevent programs from starting automatically for
troubleshooting purposes. This article describes how to prevent programs from starting
automatically from the StartUp folder.
NOTE: This procedure may not prevent all programs from starting automatically when
you start your computer. Only the programs that are designed to start automatically from
the StartUp folder are prevented from starting. For example, many antivirus programs do
not start from the StartUp folder. These programs may be started from a registry entry or
a system file such as the Autoexec.bat file. If you are unable to stop a program from
starting automatically from the StartUp folder, view the documentation included with your
program to determine how to prevent it from starting automatically.
MORE INFORMATION
To prevent programs from starting automatically from the StartUp folder, move the contents of the StartUp folder to another folder temporarily:
cd \
md startupfolderbackup
cd windows
cd "start menu"
cd programs
cd startup
dir /w
copy *.* c:\startupfolderbackup
cd c:\startupfolderbackup
dir/w
cd \
cd windows
cd "start menu"
cd programs
cd startup
del *.*
After you follow these steps, no programs are started from the StartUp folder automatically when you restart your computer.
NOTE: If you later want to restore the original contents of the StartUp folder, you can copy the files from the Startupfolderbackup folder to the StartUp folder.

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows Application.
The windows registry or System.ini file refers to this device file but the file no longer exists.

The following error occurred while reconnecting <drive>: to \\<computername>\<sharename>
Permanent connection not available. Do you want to restore this connection the next time you log on?
If someone attempts to access shared files on your computer using a Universal Naming

Extract a new copy of the Vserver.vxd file from your original Windows 95/98
disks or CD-ROM to the <drive>:\<windows>\system folder, where <drive>

which Windows 95/98 is installed.
If you are using Windows 95, you can extract the Vserver.vxd file from the following
locations:
