| If no window appears on the screen after about 15 seconds when you
insert a disc in the, the disc may have an unreadable format. This situation can occur,
for example, if the CD-R or CD-RW drive temporarily stalls while you are writing a large
file to the disc. DirectCD has a ScanDisc utility that may be able to make a CD-R disc
readable again and allow you to write to it and read from it. (ScanDisc works only with
CD-R discs, not CD-RW discs.) To use ScanDisc, follow these steps: 1. Double-click the CD icon on the Windows taskbar. If the CD-R disc has an unreadable format, the ScanDisc window will appear. 2. Read the information in the window, then click the Start button. 3. Wait while ScanDisc repairs the CD-R disc. |

is a direct quote from Scan Disk Help Documentation "What Is ScanDisc? You can use
the ScanDisc utility to restore unreadable DirectCD CD-R and CD-RW discs that were
formerly readable in UDF format . After you restore a disc, you can read and write files
to it again as you would to a floppy disk. The DirectCD Wizard gives you the option of
running ScanDisc when it detects a disc with an unreadable format. A CD-R or CD-RW disc
may become unreadable for a number of reasons. For example, the CD-R or CD-RW drive may
have stalled temporarily while you were copying a large file from your hard drive to a
CD-R disc. Or the power may have failed while files were being written. Or the CD-RW disc
may be failing in a critical area of the disc.

CDRW disc, then you may not have “Auto insert notification” enabled for your CDR
/ CDRW drive. “Auto insert notification” alerts the system when a disc is
inserted in the drive and then the system launches the program associated with the type of
disc inserted. If you insert a blank CDR / CDRW and “Auto insert notification”
is enabled, then DirectCD should automatically launch. To enable “Auto insert
notification” follow these steps:

Solution:
Be sure 'auto-insert notification' is turned on. Do this in
Control Panel | System | Device Manager | CD-ROM (select device)| Properties | Settings.
Select Explorer or My Computer and hit F5 to refresh before long filenames are supported.
Sometimes a reboot is required.

How do I Eject a DirectCD Disc to Read on Another Computer?
Solution:
When you eject a CD-R DirectCD disc from the drive and you want to read it on another
computer that has a standard CD-ROM drive, the disc must be formatted as an ISO 9660
closed session disc. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Right-click the CD icon on the Windows taskbar.
2. Select Properties from the drop-down list box.
3. Click the DirectCD Wizard tab.
4. Select the Enable ISO 9660 capability Eject option and click OK.
5. Right-click the CD icon on the Windows taskbar.
6. Select the appropriate option from the drop-down list box:
7. Select Organize the disc so that it can be read in most standard CD-ROM drives. . . and
click Finish.
Note: To make the disc readable on a standard CD-ROM drive, the disc is closed as an ISO
9660 format. This format information requires 22 MB of space on the disc for the first
session, and 13 MB for each additional session. Only CD-R discs can be closed as an ISO
9660 format. CD-RW discs do not support the ISO format.
When DirectCD finishes closing the disc to an ISO 9660 format, the disc is ejected from
the drive and, if the Display Disc Ejected notification option is selected in the DirectCD
Wizard Options, the Disc Ejected message box appears.

| Some CD ROM drives can't read packet written media. The reason for this
is that whenever the laser ramps up or ramps down before and after writing a packet of
data, 'link blocks' are created. Some CD ROM drives fail on these link blocks. We estimate
that 80% of CD-ROM drives can read packet written media. One factor that can increase the success rate is to disable 'READ-AHEAD' on the CD-ROM drive. Read-Ahead is a feature that allows the drive to 'guess' where it will find data on the disc before it actually reads the disc. However, if a CD-ROM drive guesses that there will be data in a location where there is actually a link block, it may choke. To shut off READ-AHEAD on you CD-ROM drive, right click on My Computer and select Performance. Click on File System and select CD-ROM, then Optimize Access Pattern for NO READ AHEAD. The industry is developing a new standard called 'multi-read' which will be available in many newer drives, and which will solve this problem. |

The reason for this is that only ISO level 3 is able to handle multi-extent files. UDF/Packet written files are written in multiple extents, and therefore require ISO level 3. Win 3.1 and DOS can't read ISO level 3. |

format but did not write protect the disk, you can still add more data to the disc by
following these steps: 1. Insert your disc (that was previously finalized to read on a standard CD-ROM drive) in your CD-R or CD-RW drive. 2. Start DirectCD. 3. Click the Next button two times. You will see the Make Disc Writable window. 4. Select the option that says: I will be using DirectCD to read and write the CD through the drive letter associated with the CD-R drive. 5. Click Next. 6. Type the name you want to call your CD in the Name Your Disc window, using up to 11 characters. 7. Click Finish.
