The Restoration Is Done!

4/2:  Well, here goes...  cleared an area out back, and moved Jeep out back next to frame.  Long day huh?
4/7:  Started dismantling the Jeep.  Removed the hood, bumper, grille, radiator, and fenders. 
4/8:  Removed some components: power steering pump, intake manifold and carb, headers, steering box, and steering column.
4/9:  After looking at the body, decided on ordering a fiberglass tub from
4Wheel Drive Hardware.  The Tub is scheduled to arrive Monday 4/17.  Wow, that was fast!
4/15-17:  Removed all of interior components; seats, dashboard, steering column, pedals, roll bar, etc, and finally the tub itself. 
4/17: Tub came.  Good quality and nice finish. Removed old tub.
4/20:  Cut intermediate crossmember off old frame, so it can be welded on to "new" frame.
4/21-24: more tear-down of Jeep.
4/28-5/9: removed everything off old '83 frame and tub. Applied POR-15 to '84 frame.  Put front and rear axles onto new frame.  Mounted gas tank. Mounted skid plate.  Measured all firewall and body holes on new tub, and installed the heater assembly, master cylinder, pedals, and gas filler neck. Hoisted engine, tranny, and transfer case out of old frame, and lowered onto new rolling chassis using a 4" square steel tube chained to a tree and large pole, and hoisted with a chain fall.  Painted new firewall and wheel wells. Mounted new tub onto frame, with a one inch body lift.
5/10-5/21:  Put the rest of the Jeep together.  All interior componants, wiring hooked up.  tried to start on 5/12, but starter solenoid was defective.  Replaced solenoid, and the engine fired right up.  Had to replace shifter knob, because when attempting to remove it, snapped it off.  Replaced with a billiard cue ball. Put on new tail lights, and discovered that they need to be grounded separately to frame, because they are mounted on a fiberglass surface. Replaced the tired heater blower motor.  Had to run ground wire to that as well, along with the dash and windshield wiper motor too.  Attached radio antennae to dash, to eliminate an external antennae.  Also replaced hydraulic clutch line with a longer length to comensate for body lift. replaced valve cover gasket, thought that might have been the sole source of the oil that drips on the driveway, but turned out to be the rear main.  Too late for that now, guess I'll stick to adding oil now and then.  Mounted up new driverside fender, and sanded passengerside fender, hood, and grille.  Mounted old windshield frame.  Filled in the holes that mounted the light bar with �plastic steel.� Light bar puts too much strain on windshield frame. Need to reinforce windshield before remounting.  Put on factory door latch pins to temporarily hold doors shut, will be ordering the fiberglass ones from 4wdHardware. Put soft top on�mounted with lag bolts, as opposed to cutting holes in side walls of tub to use original nuts and bolts.  Mounted new 55w driving lights on front bumper, on either side of the push bar.  Final ride height is approx 7" higher than stock
-5/30 drilled and tapped the holes to put on nerf bars, and mounted the POR-15�d nerf bars.

   35" tires, when these wear out. Carpet. Weber 32/36 Carb. Locker, with 4.56 gears. New AGR steering box.
