As the prequel trilogy begins, we get a new look at one of the true veterans of the Star Wars saga, enter Obi-Wan Kenobi. The thing that makes this Jedi's appearance different in this series of the story is that at this point, Obi-Wan is a 25 year old Padawan Learner and not the elder "Ben Kenobi" that we are all familiar with. As far as his beginnings, they are the same as many other Jedi. Obi-Wan was taken from his family at a very young age to begin his training so he didn't know much about his past. It wasn't until he turned thirteen that Obi-Wan was chosen by a Jedi as his Padawan Learner. The Jedi who chose him was Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. During his early years as a Jedi, Obi-Wan showed great promise and generated a close bond with his master, although Obi-Wan's relationship with his master and the Jedi Order were almost lost when he joined a youth movement trying to end a civil war on the planet Melida/Dann. Obi-Wan was punished for his temporary departure and had to swear to Qui-Gon that he would never upset his master or the Jedi Order again before being allowed to continue his training.
After taking part in many adventures with his master, Obi-Wan would soon embark on a mission that would be the beginning of the end for the Republic and the Jedi Order. While on a mission to dissolve a dispute between the Trade Federation and their blockade of the planet of Naboo, Obi-Wan and his master were locked in a room and poisoned with toxic gas. The two were able to escape and fled the starship by hitchhiking on a convoy to the planet below. Once they landed, the two Jedi acquired the help of a Gungan named Jar Jar Binks, who took they to an underwater city where they could meet and warn the king and his people. After returning to the surface, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon went to the Naboo Royal Palace to warn the Queen and bring her to safety. Reluctantly, the Queen agreed and left her planet to go to before the Republic Senate and plead her case there. While leaving Naboo, their ship was damaged and the group was forced to make an emergency landing on the outer rim planet of Tatooine. Once they arrived, Qui-Gon told Obi-Wan to stay with the ship and help make any necessary repairs. Obi-Wan was also instructed not to let anyone accept or send any communication transmissions of any kind in fear that they might be tracked down by such a signal.
While returning to the ship with a new passenger, namely Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon was ambushed by a mysterious attacker, a deadly individual who was very well trained in Jedi combat. While Qui-Gon fought off this aggressor, Obi-Wan ordered the pilot to take off but to fly low over the two on the ground. Qui-Gon saw his opportunity and jumped into the low-flying ship, which then took off into space. After checking on his master, Obi-Wan met Anakin for the first time, a meeting that would prove to be the end of the Jedi and the Republic. Once they arrived back on Coruscant, Obi-Wan followed his master as Qui-Gon took Anakin before the Jedi Council. After the Council turned down Qui-Gon's request to take Anakin as his new Padawan Learner, Qui-Gon decided that he would train Anakin anyway, informally and secretly. Obi-Wan questioned his master and begged him not to go against the wishes of the Council, a request that Qui-Gon denied.
With the droid army already in control of the Naboo Royal Palace, Obi-Wan and his master escort the Queen and her entourage back to the palace where they will take it back from the grip of the Trade Federation. Once inside, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan come face-to-face with the mysterious attacker from Tatooine, Darth Maul. As the two Jedi engage this powerful enemy in a lightsaber duel, they end up getting separated from each other. During their separation, Darth Maul delivers a deadly blow to Qui-Gon with his double-ended lightsaber. While still behind the timed laser door, Obi-Wan begins to feel a rage within him that he cannot hide. Once the door opens, Obi-Wan immediately begins to attack Darth Maul, swinging at him with everything he has. Unfortunately, Obi-Wan's rage gets the better of him as Darth Maul uses a Dark Side Force power to push Obi-Wan into a nearby exhaust shaft, making him lose his lightsaber in the fall. While dangling from a spout attached to the inside of the shaft, Obi-Wan collects himself and re-connects with the Light Side of the Force.
As Darth Maul taunts the hanging Jedi from above, Obi-Wan uses his connection to the Force to leap out of the shaft. On his way up, Obi-Wan uses the Force again to grab Qui-Gon's lightsaber and with one strong slash, disposes of his enemy. Obi-Wan then rushes to his masters side. Even with death about to take him, Qui-Gon makes Obi-Wan promise that he will train Anakin, a promise that Obi-Wan accepts without taking the time to think of the consequences. After attending Qui-Gon's funeral service, Obi-Wan goes to see Master Yoda, who tells the young Jedi that he has been promoted to the level of Jedi Knight. Yoda then continues to express his disagreement of Obi-Wan taking Anakin on as his Padawan Learner. It is only after Obi-Wan tells Master Yoda that he intends to keep his promise to Qui-Gon of training the boy, without the approval of the Council if necessary, that Master Yoda concedes and grants Obi-Wan permission to train Anakin. |
