After the destruction of the Death Star, Luke Skywalker decided to join the Rebel Alliance and was inducted into their military as a Commander. While on patrol duty, Luke was attacked by a Wampa ice creature and dragged back to its lair. Had it not been for Luke's knowledge of the Force, he might not have escaped. Then while trying to return back to the Rebel base Luke, suffering from injuries sustained by the Wampa and the bitter cold of the planet, fell victim to his surroundings. Had it not been for Han Solo, who went out to look for the young Jedi, Luke would have died for sure. Shortly after returning to the base, the Rebel Alliance was attacked by the Imperial Army, led by Darth Vader. With the defeat of the Battle of Yavin still fresh in his mind, Vader was hell-bent on destroying the Rebel base and capturing those responsible for the demise of the Death Star. It was only after the Rebels formed a counter-strike against the Imperial Army that they were able to escape with their lives. While everyone else returned to the alternate Rebel command post, Luke took a different path. Luke followed the guidance of his mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi and went to the swamp planet of Dagobah to find the great Jedi Master Yoda.

Once Luke arrived, he came across a strange creature whom he later learned was the great Jedi he was searching for. Luke immediately began his training, learning the ways of the Force. Yoda put many challenges before Luke and although he would succeed in the simpler tasks, his doubt and disbelief in the strength of the Force kept him from progressing his skills further. Unfortunately Luke stopped his training after getting a message that his friends were in danger and needed his help, a decision that he would soon regret. The message was part of a trap set by Darth Vader to bring the young Jedi to him. After Luke arrived on the cloud city of Bespin to try and find his friends, he then confronted Darth Vader and the two squared off in a lightsaber duel. Still very inexperienced with a lightsaber and with only a minimal knowledge of the Force, Luke lost not only the duel to Vader, but his hand as well. After being told from Vader himself that they were of the same blood and being offered a chance to rule the galaxy by his fathers side, Luke turned down Vader's offer and by calling out to Leia through the Force, was able to escape down an exhaust shaft to the Millennium Falcon waiting below. With the capture of Han Solo, the loss of the Rebel base on Hoth, and the devastating news of his past, Luke was more puzzled and doubtful of his future than ever before. Never the less, Luke would strive forward and continue serving the Rebel Alliance against the Empire.
