After a devastating defeat on the planet Hoth and the surprise attack on the cloud city of Bespin, Luke Skywalker gained a renewed sense of himself and decided to pick up his Jedi training where he left off. First he would have to go back to Tatooine and build a new lightsaber, since he lost the one that Obi-Wan gave him in his fight with Darth Vader. Fortunately for him, Obi-Wan's hut contained a vast range of information about the Jedi Order. This was good news for Luke because he found Obi-Wan's instructions on how to build his own lightsaber. Once Luke was done with his new weapon, he traveled to the palace of the notorious gangster Jabba the Hutt to free his friend Han Solo.
Upon arrival at Jabba's palace, Luke sent in his two droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO in under the guise of being gifts, then Luke came in asking that his friend be returned to him. Jabba wasn't interested in making any negotiations and sent Luke to feed his Rancor located below his throne room. While battling the huge beast, Luke coaxed the Rancor to follow him back to its pen. Then at the precise moment, Luke hit the switch that sent the gate crashing down on the Rancor's neck, killing it. With this unexpected turn of events, Jabba had his personnel take Luke, Han Solo, and Chewbacca to the desert where they would be dropped into the Great Pit of Carkoon and fed to the Sarlacc that lay within. Unknown to Jabba at the time was that Luke was prepared for such a turn of events, for hidden inside of R2-D2 was Luke's lightsaber. Just before Luke was to be pushed into the pit, he called out to R2-D2 for his weapon and began a revolt that would send many of Jabba's group into the pit while Luke and friends escaped unharmed.
Once Han and Chewbacca were safe, Luke went back to Dagobah so that he could complete his training with Yoda. When he arrived, Luke found Yoda near death, he had finally succumb to old age. Yoda died and became one with the Force. Luke then turned and saw the spectral image of Obi-Wan and Yoda. They told him of the last pieces of his past, that his father Anakin Skywalker had fallen to the Dark Side and became Darth Vader, and that he had a sister, Princess Leia. The two Jedi also told Luke that before he could become a Jedi himself, he would have to face Darth Vader. Upon his return to the Rebel base on Endor, Luke caught up with the now General Han Solo and his task force. Their mission was to turn off the deflector shield generator located on Endor that was protecting the second Death Star as it near completion. Luke decided that he could turn his father back to the Light Side of the Force, since Vader didn't kill him on Bespin when he had the chance. Before Luke left to turn himself in to the Imperial Army, he told Leia about their past, about how they were brother and sister and that Darth Vader was really their father. Luke then left to turn himself in and was brought to Vader.
Upon his arrival at the Imperial base, Luke immediately began referring to Vader as Anakin, even though to Vader, Anakin was no more. Once Vader brought Luke before the Emperor, the Emperor forced Vader and Luke to fight in a lightsaber duel, a duel that Luke refused to engage in. After Vader probed Luke's mind and found out the truth about Leia being his daughter, coupled with Vader's threats of turning Leia to the Dark Side, Luke struck back at his father and nearly killed him. As the Emperor sat there and watched, he instructed Luke to finish his father off and take Vader's place beside him, an offer that Luke refused with the statement "I am a Jedi, like my father before me". With this rejection, the Emperor lashed out at Luke with a hail of Dark Side energy which nearly killed him. Luke pleaded to his father for help, a call that Vader responded to by picking the Emperor up and throwing him down an exhaust shaft. In doing this, Vader sustained massive injuries that he would not be able to recover from. While trying to leave the Imperial base, Vader could go on no more. Vader asked Luke to remove his mask so that he could see his son with his own eyes, a request that Luke willingly granted. Luke had succeeded in bringing his father back from the Dark Side, then Anakin Skywalker died, becoming one with the Force. In a private ceremony on Endor, Luke burned the armor that was once such a symbol of evil and said goodbye to his father. Luke then returned to the Rebel Alliance victory celebration and in the background noticed the ghostly image of his father, Obi-Wan, and Yoda together again as the Jedi that they once were. |
