Luke Skywalker led a simple, but lonely life, on his home planet of Tatooine. Luke lived with Owen and Beru Lars, whom he thought to be his aunt and uncle, and worked on their moisture farm. Luke was always dreaming of bigger and better things than what he could find at home. His biggest dream was to join the Imperial Academy, but his uncle wouldn't allow it. Owen would always tell Luke that he was needed on the farm. Little did Luke know that his dreams of great adventure would come to him in the form of a couple of droids. While doing some maintenance on the droids, one of them just up and left the Lars' workshop and headed out into the desert. After catching up with the droid, Luke came face-to-face with the local hermit whom everyone referred to as "Old Ben".
With this meeting, Ben informed Luke that he was once a Jedi Knight and that his name was really Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan then told Luke that his father, Anakin Skywalker, was also a Jedi Knight and that the two fought side-by-side at one point in their lives. When Luke began asking more questions about his father, Obi-Wan then proceeded to tell Luke that his father was dead, killed by an evil Sith Lord named Darth Vader. This was not the whole truth, but it was all that Obi-Wan felt Luke could handle at the time. As a present from his father, Obi-Wan gave Luke the lightsaber his father used as a Jedi. After returning to the Lars homestead, Luke found Owen and Beru dead, murdered by Imperial troopers looking for the droids that took Luke to Obi-Wan. With the only family that he knew now gone, Luke then decided that he would follow Obi-Wan on his mission to the planet Alderaan.
Once Luke and Obi-Wan acquired transportation from Han Solo and his co-pilot Chewbacca aboard their ship the Millennium Falcon, the group left Tatooine to continue the mission given to them by Princess Leia and headed to Alderaan. While in hyperspace, Obi-Wan began Luke's lightsaber training with the help of a Jedi Training Remote. Obi-Wan also tried to teach Luke on how to use the Force, a task that proved to be more difficult that Obi-Wan had hoped. Once the Millennium Falcon left hyperspace and arrived in orbit over Alderaan they were shocked to see that the planet was gone, reduced to nothing more than space dust. While trying to figure out what had happened to the planet, the Millennium Falcon was captured by the super-weapon, the Death Star, and brought aboard by its tractor beam. The crew soon learned that Princess Leia was captive onboard and decided to rescue her.
After freeing the Princess, Luke, Han, and Chewbacca returned to the Millennium Falcon. As they start to board the starship, Luke turns to see Obi-Wan and Darth Vader engaged in a lightsaber duel. Obi-Wan then decides to give himself up to Vader in order for the group to escape safely. In doing so, Obi-Wan's body disappears and becomes one with the Force. After devising a plan from the stolen information on the Death Star on how to destroy it, Luke decides to help the Rebel Alliance with their attack on the Death Star by piloting one of the many X-Wing fighters that will be used in the battle. After many of the pilots who were supposed to deliver a Photon Torpedo down an exhaust shaft on the super-weapon were shot down, mostly by Darth Vader himself, Luke took up the lead and decided to fire the final shot himself. With some cover from the Millennium Falcon, Obi-Wan's encouragement, and with the help of the Force, Luke hit his mark and destroyed the Death Star with one shot. This marked a day of great pride for the fledgling Rebel Alliance as they destroyed the Empire's weapon of mass destruction. A victory that would soon turn sour as the Empire got it's revenge during the next great battle on the ice planet Hoth. |
