After being defeated by the Rebel Alliance, Darth Vader had a renewed sense of anger about him. This loss also dissatisfied his master, Darth Sidious, where he had not expected such a turn of events. Never the less, Sidious ordered Vader to embark on a new mission, to hunt down and capture the Rebels responsible for the destruction of the Death Star. Darth Vader led a convoy of Imperial Troops, who traveled onboard the Empire's newest weapon, the Star Destroyer. Vader traveled on his own modified and much larger version of the starcraft called the Super Star Destroyer. Vader and his Imperial Army finally tracked down the Rebels on the ice planet of Hoth. Upon arrival into the planets atmosphere, Vader launched a full scale attack on the Rebels. Although the Rebel base was destroyed, most of the Rebel forces managed to escape.
Upset with the news that the Rebels responsible for the destruction of the Death Star had escaped Vader and his massive star fleet, Darth Sidious ordered Vader to find the "son of Skywalker" and turn him to the Dark Side of the Force. In an elaborate plan to do so, Vader hired a large group of bounty hunters to capture Han Solo in an attempt to draw Luke to the Cloud City of Bespin, a trap that Luke unknowingly fell right into. Shortly after his arrival, Luke was confronted by Vader. Luke and Vader engaged in a lightsaber duel, one that left Luke at a disadvantage due to his lack of training. Vader then ended the duel by slicing off Luke's weapon hand. Then, while the discouraged Luke lay there in shock at the loss of his hand, Vader reveals to him that what Obi-Wan said was in fact true, he was Luke's father. Vader tried to get Luke to turn to the Dark Side by offering him the chance to rule the galaxy by his side, an offer that Luke refused. After Luke escaped by sliding down an exhaust shaft and landing on the Millennium Falcon waiting below, Vader felt lost within himself, now he truly had nothing. |
