After having his first face-to-face meeting with his son, Darth Vader began to feel something deep inside of him that he did not recognize. Meanwhile, his master Darth Sidious also senses these feelings in his apprentice and grows concerned about his once faithful general. To prevent anything further from developing between Vader and the younger Skywalker, Sidious re-assigns Vader to watch over the construction of the second and more powerful Death Star over the planet Endor. Sidious also foresaw a meeting where Luke would come face-to-face with both himself and Vader.
Once the three were brought together, Sidious forced Vader to engage Luke in a lightsaber duel. Even though Luke had enhanced his level of Jedi powers and his skills with a lightsaber, he refused to give in to the temptation of the Dark Side that was offered to him. While trying to avoid his father, Vader used his powers to look into Luke's mind. Upon doing so, Vader found out about Leia, and threatened to turn her to the Dark Side if Luke did not. With the safety of his sister hanging in the balance, Luke became enraged and went after Vader with a great fury. While Vader lay on the floor, weakened and defeated, Sidious told Luke to finish Vader off and take his place. Luke quickly came to his senses and realigned himself with the Light Side of the Force. Luke rejected the offer of the Dark Lord saying that "I am a Jedi, like my father before me" while looking back down of his father.
Darth Sidious then decided that Luke must die for his decision. While being engulfed with a massive wave of Dark Side energy, Luke pleaded to his father for help. Fortunately for Luke, and to the surprise of Sidious, the message got through to the Anakin buried deep inside of Vader. As Vader lifted his master up from behind and threw him down the reactor shaft, putting an end to the reign of terror behind the Empire, Vader took on enough of the Dark Side energy that he was weakened to near death. As he lay their on the floor, Vader asks Luke to remove his mask, so that he may see him with his own eyes. Then, just as soon as he looked upon his kin, Vader, now Anakin again, died in Luke's arms. His body disappeared as it became one with the Light Side of the Force. Luke, in a private ceremony on Endor, burned the armor that was once worn by Darth Vader, and rejoiced in his fathers return to the Light. |
