The former Jedi known as Anakin Skywalker, now the evil Sith Lord Darth Vader, is one of the most powerful and influential figures in the Star Wars saga. After he fell to the Dark Side of the Force, his only goal, besides that of faithfully serving his master, was to wipe out all of the remaining Jedi in the galaxy. With the creation of the Rebel Alliance, the Emperor sent Vader out to find the Rebel Base and destroy it. During his search, Vader came across and captured Princess Leia Organa, a Rebel spy. Vader tortured the Princess until she finally gave up the information about the secret location of the Rebel base. Vader also knew that Leia had somehow got her hands on the design blueprints for the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star. Then, as Vader contemplates his next move, the Death Star sees the Millennium Falcon and captures it. Once it's passengers sneak aboard the Death Star, Vader senses something familiar about one the intruders. While hunting down this particular individual, and after coming face-to-face with this spy, Vader realizes that it is his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The two engage in a lightsaber duel, one which neither combatant is able to get the upper hand on the other. It is only by Obi-Wan's decision to sacrifice himself so that Luke, Han, Chewbacca, and the Princess can escape, that Vader is able to defeat his former mentor. With one strong blow, Vader kills Obi-Wan, who's body then disappears and becomes one with the Force.

Once the group of Rebel spies escaped from the Death Star, they returned to the Rebel base with the Death Star's blueprints and formulated a plan to destroy the massive weapon of destruction. By firing a Photon Torpedo into one of the exhaust shafts, which led straight down to the main power reactor, the Death Star would be no more. Darth Vader himself tried to stop the Rebel assault on the Death Star, since he was a highly skilled pilot, Vader killed many Rebel pilots upon their approach. Unfortunately for Vader, his attempt to stop the last Rebel pilot, Luke Skywalker, as he made his approach was foiled by the late arrival of Han Solo aboard his Millennium Falcon. With the Death Star destroyed, and Vader temporarily lost in space, the Rebel Alliance had earned a great victory. One that would soon be spoiled with the return of an angered Darth Vader and the Imperial Army at his disposal.
