Anakin Skywalker is, without a doubt, the most influential figure in the entire Star Wars saga. From his first appearance as a young boy in Episode I, to his transformation into the evil Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker has had something to do with every part of the Star Wars story. Born on the outer rim planet of Tatooine, Anakin lived with his mother Shmi Skywalker and they were both slaves. One thing that makes Anakin such an interesting character is that he was conceived without a father. This is what leads Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn to believe that he is the great prophecy of the Jedi. It is believed that he will bring balance to the Force.
Even as a young boy, Anakin was extremely talented. He could fix anything that was put before him. He even built a protocol droid to help his mother when he was only nine years old. Unaware of his attunement to the Force, Anakin soon realized that he had incredibly fast reflexes. It was this gift that his owner Watto exploited by making Anakin compete in the Podraces, a high-speed race where drivers sat in a cockpit that was propelled with anywhere from two to four engines. Ironically, after being found by Qui-Gon Jinn and offering to help the Jedi Master and Queen Amidala, it was these Podraces that would eventually free him. Torn between his dreams of becoming a Jedi and his love for his mother, he was unsure which path he should take. Shmi then told Anakin to leave and not to worry about her, that her place was there on Tatooine. Before turning to leave, Anakin promised that he would return to free his mother someday.
Once they arrived on Coruscant, Qui-Gon Jinn presented what he believed to be the great prophecy of the Force to the Jedi Council. After putting Anakin through a series of tests to determine his abilities in the Force, the council decided that Anakin was too old to begin training as a Jedi. This decision was also coupled with a sense of fear in the boy, which Jedi Master Yoda described, is part of the path to the Dark Side. Unsure of his fate, Anakin questioned Qui-Gon on what was to become of him. Qui-Gon assured Anakin that even though he would not be allowed to teach him directly, that Anakin should watch him closely, learning from what he sees.
During the attack on the palace grounds, Qui-Gon tells Anakin to find a place to hide where he will be safe and in doing so, ends up in the cockpit of a Naboo Starfighter which is activated shortly after it picks up R2-D2 and then has it's auto-pilot engaged. While Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan tend to the mysterious attacker from Tatooine, now revealed to be Darth Maul, Anakin and R2-D2 shuttle off and are drawn in to the battle in the orbit over Naboo. While Anakin fights along side the Naboo Bravo Squadron in an attempt to destroy the Federation Control Ship, Anakin slips into the inner core of the Control Ship and destroys its main power reactor. During the fight between the Jedi Knights and Darth Maul, Qui-Gon suffers a fatal blow at the hands of Darth Maul. After Obi-Wan defeats Darth Maul, he goes to Qui-Gon... but it's too late. With his final breath, Qui-Gon makes Obi-Wan promise that he will train the boy, a promise that Obi-Wan willingly accepts.
Obi-Wan then goes to the Jedi Temple and finds out that he has been promoted to the level of Jedi Knight. Master Yoda then expresses his disagreement about Obi-Wan taking Anakin as his Padawan Learner. A decision that he quickly changes and grants Obi-Wan permission to take Anakin as his apprentice. |
