With this new clue and an even deeper mystery as to who this new bounty hunter was, the Jedi Council dispatched Obi-Wan to research and investigate further into the plot to assassinate Senator Amidala. While Anakin was given the assignment of taking the Senator back to Naboo and protecting her. As Obi-Wan pressed forward with his investigation, Anakin started to show his feelings towards Padme, even though it is against the Jedi Code to engage in such relations. After a breakdown of their defenses, Anakin and Padme shared a kiss. Padme quickly dismissed their feelings for each other as something that just cannot be. That night Anakin received another vision of his mother in terrible pain, this last vision drove him to go against the order of the Jedi Council and leave Naboo to go to Tatooine and find his mother, a trip that Padme willingly accompanies him on.
Upon his arrival, Anakin finds his former owner Watto and asks for his mother. Watto then proceeds to tell Anakin that he sold his mother to a moisture farmer named Cliegg Lars, who then freed and married her. Upon their arrival at the Lars homestead, Anakin and Padme are greeted by Owen Lars, his girlfriend Beru, and then by Cliegg Lars. Cliegg proceeds to tell Anakin that Shmi was kidnapped by Tusken Raiders 30 days prior and was presumed dead. Anakin would not accept that for an answer and set out to find his mother. After tracking down the Tusken Raider encampment, Anakin snuck in under the cover of night to find his mother near death in a hut. Both were overwhelmed at the sight of the other, and seeing Anakin all grown up was all that Shmi needed before passing on, she then died in his arms. The death of his mother sent Anakin into an uncontrollable rage, a rage that would be the end of every man, woman, and child in that camp. The next day Anakin returned with Shmi's body and buried her on the Lars homestead.
After Anakin said his final goodbye to his mother, he and Padme were notified of an emergency message from Obi-Wan, instructing him to re-transmit the same message back to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. The message gave details on the assassination attempt on the Senator, and about the Seperatist movements on Geonosis. However the message was interrupted by some battle droids that took Obi-Wan prisoner. With this, Anakin and Padme decide to go and rescue Obi-Wan themselves. Shortly after their arrival on Geonosis, Anakin and Padme are also captured. Even though the group of Separatists try to execute the Senator and Jedi Knights, the resilient group escape the monsters sent to kill them and were soon joined by a task force of Jedi Knights. A great battle, the opening scene of the Clone Wars, had just unfolded as battle droids fill the execution arena. Although the Jedi had fought bravely, the soon fell short and were faced with the option of surrendering or being killed. Just then Master Yoda arrived with reinforcements, the newly created Republic Army.
As the renewed battle now continued, Obi-Wan and Anakin ride a Republic Gunship in pursuit of Count Dooku as he tries to escape. Once the two Jedi came face to face with their former comrade, Anakin's aggression got the better of him as he tried to charge Dooku alone and was quickly dealt a strong blast of energy from the more powerful Count Dooku, leaving Obi-Wan to face him alone. After Dooku got the better of Obi-Wan, he attempted to finish off the Jedi Knight when Anakin came to Obi-Wan's rescue. During the duel between Anakin and Dooku, the more experienced Dooku proved to be too much for the young Padawan to handle as Anakin lost part of his arm in the battle. Dooku quickly escaped after a very fast paced duel with his former master, Jedi Master Yoda.
After the smoke cleared, the surviving Jedi returned to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, while Anakin, after being given a replacement arm, escorts Padme back to Naboo. Little do the Jedi Council or Obi-Wan know is that Anakin and Padme get married in secret while on Naboo. An ordinarily happy event that sets the stage for great tragedy and turmoil to come in the near future.
