Of all the artwork I've done of Princess Aurora, turning her into a mermaid provided the most challenges.  Initially, trying to overcome the challenges of matching her skin color to Ariel's mermaid body proved insurmountable.  After deciding to use Ariel's body for Aurora's mermaid appearance, I had to figure out how to make her look like she's always had fins.  Furthermore, Aurora's hair has to flow naturally around her shoulders as there is no dress to mask any inconsistencies.  Last, her fin and shell color must look match the gold of sunshine in her hair and lips that shame the red, red rose.  The picture below is the most complicated piece of photo manipulation I've ever done with over 10 layers being used to place her head, hair, necklace, seashell, and fins just right.  It took over 2 hours to complete, and it is one of my favorites.
Sleeping Beauty
Princess Aurora
The first challenge I encountered is stylistic.  Since Aurora was drawn with vertical lines, the transition to putting her into horizontal style artwork made for pictures that didn't always look right.  I discarded many versions because the poofier dresses made Aurora look short and she lost some of her grace and elegance.  I have yet to find a picture of Snow White that works for Aurora.  I think it may have something to do with Snow White's height.  She appears shorter than the other Princesses and her shorter dress doesn't work for the tall and slender Aurora.  The first picture is of Aurora in Cinderella's ball gown.  This picture works because Aurora's hair falls nicely over her shoulders while still framing her face.  In tribute to the hairband Cinderella wore in the film, I did two versions, one where Aurora wears her hairband from her peasant dress, and another where Aurora wears her crown and gold necklace.
Since Belle has quite a few dresses, and since Beauty and the Beast is another one of my favorite films, I created quite a few pictures of Aurora in dresses and gowns originally belonging to Belle.  This presented new challenges as the style of the two differs greatly.  Another challenge is mixing and matching different skin colors as Aurora is given a new dress.  I've been able to overcome this by using her necklace to offset the slight differences.
GO COUGARS!!!
Ever since I was little, I have loved sports, with football being my favorite.  For football season, I decided to turn Aurora into a cheerleader and also made her a Quarterback Princess.
As color changing became easier and easier, I started to look for a new challenge in my artwork.  One day while looking at the artwork of a Disney fan who drew the princesses as mermaids I decided to try creating new pictures of Aurora by depicting her in the dresses of the other princesses.  This was considerably more challenging than simply changing the color of Aurora's dress, but I found it very rewarding when a picture finally came together, sometimes after hours of work and overcoming the challenges presented when mixing and matching the distinct styles used in Disney animation over the years.
This is one of my favorite pictures because it captures Aurora's Briar Rose upbringing in her royal colors.
In front of her own castle, Disney's Sleeping Beauty wears the gown of another Beauty.
There's something nice about placing a pretty bow in Aurora's long, flowing hair the color of golden sunshine.
