The walled town of Rothenburg, Germany
This castle, which I understand was the model for the castle in Walt Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" and the castle in Disney World, is a "must see" if traveling in the Bavarian Alps of southern Germany. It is quite a climb to get to it, up a windy road through forest. Walk up or pay for a ride in a horse drawn wagon. (You can also take a bus but you lose something of the atmosphere). Once there you will enjoy rooms richly decorated with paintings, wood carvings, gilded brass everywhere etc. It actually is not so very old as castles in Europe go. It was built from 1869-1886 by King Ludwig. He spent a very few days in this castle before his death under mysterious circumstances. At the time of his death the castle was not yet complete and all work planned but not yet begun was cancelled. No wear and tear in this castle.
Walk through the narrow lanes of this wonderful medieval walled town which towers about 200 ft above the banks of the Tauber River. Beautiful half-timber buildings dating to the mid 1200s line the narrow streets. Then climb up the Town Hall Tower for a really good view of the whole town and the Tauber Valley, and walk along the top of the wall. We have visited Rothenburg two times. The next time I would like to spend at least one night right in the town. I think it would be wonderful to walk around in the evening (after most of the tourists have left).

I love this 12th century castle. I have been in it three times. The setting is beautiful - right on the very edge of Lake Geneva with the Alps in the background. It is a wonderful castle to walk through and it is furnished just enough so you can imagine what life must have been like to live there...pretty cold in the winter I think!. After a tour of the castle we like to have a fish dinner in one of the outdoor restaurants along the lakeside and then take a leisurely early evening walk.

When my husband and I have time and money (both at the same time that is), our favorite place to travel is Europe - taking walks high in the Alps, walking through narrow streets and lanes in towns lined with half-timbered buildings, the fjords of Norway, biking in Holland, lovely towns in the British Isles - beautiful lakes, towns, mountains, flowers - so very enjoyable to us. And I like to paint places we have been to - it just extends the pleasure of the trips we have taken.
