Golf

Gee, do we like golf.  Let's see.  Every year we travel to Georgia's Jekyll Island for a week of relaxing on the beach and some golf. OK a lot of golf; 1999 saw 171 holes played in 7 days (that's nearly 27 holes per day) and we took Friday off.

Speaking about a lot of golf, Rick competed in the 1999 Slacker's Triathlon over the June 18-20th weekend.  It started with the Washington Golf Monthly's Solstice Survival Challenge at Queenstown Harbor Links and ended with an all afternoon beach party at Sandy Point State Park.  The results of the event are posted here.

Back on Jekyll Island, there are 63 holes of golf.  That's correct 63, and it costs a mere $30 for all day greens fees.  The courses tend to be in excellent shape all year.  Just down I-95 is Davis Love's municipal masterpiece "Laurel Island Links" in Kingsland, Georgia.  Rick's first time there he had an 89.  And despite playing poorly in his last visit, he enjoys the layout.

Locally, we enjoy the Baltimore County courses as well as the gems the City owns.   We are members of the Western Maryland College Golf Course in Westminster.   This is a 9 hole historic track that includes a 602 yard par 5.  When the wind is in your face, it feels and plays like a 12.

Another fun local course, is River Downs near Finksburg.  Last time there, we counted 14 forced carries of more than 50 yards on the 18 holes....uggh.  To make it ever more interesting, a fair number of these forced carries are between the tee shot and approach.  #9, one of their signature holes, plays to 170 yards or so, all carry over a deep ravine with no bailout areas - even long is bad.  For the record, I have successfully crossed the chasm twice; even got a par once.

Etc.

We also enjoy, but aren't real good at, cross country skiing.  Unfortunately, the Baltimore region is not conducive to cross country skiing as it doesn't snow here.  Well, it does, but it tends to come in bunches and melts off real quick.

Anyway, here's a few photos of Jean trying her hand at it, while we were "on holiday" over Presidents Day weekend. pic1  pic2
