17 Years After Don's Death
Adrienne's House
Boston, Massachusetts
"Mom, I'm headin' over to Tash's place, I'll see you Monday night." Karen Gordon-Delaney called to her mother, as she grabbed her backpack and sleeping bag.
"Okay, I'll be here if you need to call me," Adrienne said giving her daughter a hug.
"Whatever, mom. I gotta go." Karen broke off the hug and dashed out the door.
'You should be nicer to your mother, Karen.' A familiar voice said.
"You're one to talk, dad." She growled under her breath, throwing her bags into the back of her truck and getting into the drivers seat. Karen knew that was a cruel thing to say to her father, but she couldn't help it at that moment.
"I'm sorry," she apologised, starting up the engine and backing out. "You still there??" She asked. She smelt the familiar scent of Don and smiled, glad he was there. She had never been told how her father had died, but she knew it wasn't pleasent and that he'd done something horrible to her mother in some way.
Karen had first become aware of his presence when she was only four, she'd been playing on the road, unaware of the approaching car, when he had pushed her out of the way. He'd been sort of an invisible friend, but a real one. Almost a gaurdian angel. He was better then a regular father.
'Where are we going?'
"Tash's, some friends and I are going outta town for the weekend." She said.
'Sounds like fun.'
"You're welcome to come," she said, knowing he would whether or not she gave him permission. She pulled up infront of Tash's appartment building and turned off the engine, opening the door and getting out. "You can stay here."
1 - 8 - 1. She pressed Tash's number into the call padd. The comm system made some hissing noises and Tash's familiar voice came on.
"Hello??"
"Tash, it's me!"
"Oh, come on up, we've been waiting." Karen walked into the lobby and went to the stairs. Skipping steps up to the fifth floor. While waiting infront of Tash's apartment, she smelled the familiar scent of her father.
"I told you to wait in the car!" She said as the door opened, revealing Tash.
"Huh?" She said.
"Oh, uh, never mind," Karen said quickly walking into Tash's apartment, which was blasting Tupac music. Tash was short for Natasha, who was black with beautiful black hair and peircing black eyes.
"Hey Karen!" Krystal called from Tash's bedroom.
"Are we ready to go??" Karen asked.
"Yep!" Laura yelped jumping off Tash's bed and tripping over a pair of sandals, falling at Karen's feet. Everyone laughed. Laura had short, light brown hair, she was very pretty, but had a tendancy to be very clumbsy . . . not to mention whiny!
"Ow!" Laura said, unemotionally. It was going to be a LONG weekend.
Later In Karen's truck . . .
Krystal, Karen and Brenna were all squished in Karens red truck, that was speeding along the highway, blasting music from it's radio. Karen looked a lot like her mother, the same blond hair, the same face, but she had her father's eyes, he'd been pretty good looking. She'd heard about him from Adrienne and from what she knew of him, couldn't imagine him trying to hurt her.
"Brenna, how can you read NOW???" Krystal asked, the small blond girl, huddled over an Ann McKaffrey book. She gave Krystal an evil look and returned to her book. Krys shook her head.
"Anyone know where we're going??" Brenna asked. Krystal, who was a brunette with a nice build and a very pretty face, shrugged.
"I'm just following Tash!" Karen said, answering their questioning looks.
"Ooo, it's an X-File!" Krys said sarcastically.
In the other car, there was Tash, Vicky, Sherry, Laura and Christine. They too were squished, but Tash and Karen were the only ones who had licences, so that couldn't be helped.
Tash's car suddenly turned off to the left and Karen did her best to follow suit. The truck bumped over the gravel road that lead to a bridge.
"Weird," Karen said.
"My God! Look at THAT!!" Brenna, who had put away the book said pointing ahead of them. There was a huge dark house ahead of them, and Karen got shivers at the sight of it.
"Wicked!" Krys said in aw. They arrived accross the bridge and continued toward the parking lot. Suddenly the car lurched backwards.
"WHAT THE HELL??!!" Karen said in surprise, as the car began backing away from the house, almost as though it was a cat, backing away from some dangerous animal.
'You can't go in there!!!' Don yelled, Karen was glad that she was the only one who could hear him at that moment.
"Why the fuck not??!!" She hissed.
"Karen, what are you talking about??" Brenna starred at her.
"This isn't funny, Karen! Stop it!!" Krys said, a nervousness entering her voice.
"LEAVE ME ALONE!!!" She yelled, ignoring her friends and pushing down the gas pedal, suddenly the car took off straight into the parking lot. Karen turned off the engine without bothering to park and quickly got out of the car, completely out of breath. The others in the car followed suit, looking at eachother in confussion.
"What the hell happened??!!" Sherry asked coming over to the shaking group. Sherry was a tiny Phillipino girl, with a lot of attitude and a great sense of humour.
"Ask Karen!" Vicky said, with a quivering voice. Everyone looked at Karen.
"I, uh, don't know," She said quickly. "Let's get into the house, it's getting dark and I'd like to see this place!" Karen lied. She actually wanted to be as far from the house as she could possibly be, but they had come that far, they could leave in the morning if they really wanted to.
"Yeah, let's go!" Christine said. Christine had blond hair, with a set of glasses perched on her nose. She looked very ordinary, but had an inner glow and friendliness that many guys found attractive.
The door creaked open, revealing a very large room with a piano and bar near one end and a long spiral staircase going upstairs.
"Welcome to the Carnovasch Estate!" Tash said enthusiastically leading the group in and lifting her arms in the air, almost as if she were the host of some sort of party. "I thought we could all sleep in here, since we brought sleeping bags, it wouldn't be fair to let certain people use the beds."
"You mean this place is fully furnished??" Karen asked in aw. Tash nodded.
"Awesome!" Sherry said.
"It's freezing in here!" Krystal complained.
"There are only fireplaces, electricity is limited, but there IS plumbing," Tash said. Vicky walked over to the fireplace in the room. She had shoulder-length, dark brown hair that was usually kept in a ponytail, she had a pair of glasses and she had the build of a swimmer. (Probably because she WAS a swimmer!)
"Anyone got a match??" She asked.
"Your face, my ass." Sherry said, sarcastically. Vicky glared at her.
"Here," Christine tossed Vicky a box of wooden matches.
"I'm gonna go look around if you don't mind," Karen said, heading for the stairs.
"Yeah, sure. I brought some stew, I'll heat it up, if anyone wants a late supper." Tash said.
"Call me when it's ready," Karen yelled from the stairs. She walked down the hall and entered one of the rooms. It was red, everything was covered in spiderwebs and there was a large painting of a man on one wall. He looked kinda spooky, but that wasn't why she'd wanted to go exploring. She glanced around the room and found a large, full length mirror. It was the only way she could see her father, and she was more comfortable if she could see him. She looked into the mirror and saw Don waiting for her. She glared into the mirror.
"What the hell were you trying to pull out there?" She growled softly, she didn't want her friends to hear her.
'You can't stay here, you're in danger here. There's something evil in this house. The same evil that killed Carno over there.' He nodded towards the painting.
"How the do YOU know that??" She asked, skeptically. A pained look appeared in his eyes.
'Your mother never told you how I died. She made sure you never found out.'
"What are you trying to say??" She asked. Karen suddenly felt a ice-cold hand on her neck and she screamed, whirling around.
"Holy!" It was Krystal.
"Wha . . . what are you doing here?" She asked with quivering voice.
"Stew's ready!" She said. "You asked us to call you."
"Oh, uh, thanks." She said nervously. The two friends headed down stairs.
"Why were you talking to the mirror in there??" Krys asked, suspiciously. It really wasn't a very good day, she'd almost been caught three times. 'My friends must think I'm nuts!' She thought to herself.
"Never mind," Karen said.
"No seriously, what's up?" Krystal said, stopping Karen and looking at her with concern. "You seem a bit . . . distant, are you okay?" Karen nodded and smiled reasuringly.
"Yeh, I'm fine. Don't worry about it." Krys smiled a little shyly, she'd always been nice to Karen, and had sort of taken her under her wing. The two had been close friends since Junior High and told eachother everything . . . well, almost everything.
"You know you can talk to me, Karen. If there's anything wrong, I'm here. And you know how I can keep a secret." Karen nodded.
"Thanks Krys. I don't know what's wrong, I just have a bad feeling about this house, about everything." She shrugged and looked around at the gothic designs that covered the walls and decorated the stairway.
"This place is pretty weird! Don't worry about ghosts, they don't come out 'til AFTER the lights go out!" Krys said with a grin. Karen smiled.
"Isn't that comforting!" She said sarcastically. Krys shrugged.
"I try!" The two continued down the stairs, then passed through the dining room and entered the kitchen, where they pulled up a couple of chairs to the table. Christine and Tash were the only others at the table.
"So, how's the house??" Christine asked.
"Dusty," Karen responded.
"Freaky," said Krys.
"I knew you'd like it!" Tash laughed. They all began to eat their stew, when Laura came running in carrying a handful of candles and a large book.
"Hey guys! Look what I found!" She said, putting the book down infront of Krystal, who opened it.
"Consumite Furore??? Sounds Latin," She said. Sherry who had followed Laura in looked over Krys' shoulder at the text.
'Don't let them use the book.'
"You guys, this is REAL magic!" Sherry exclaimed. Karen looked at it skeptically.
"I don't know. This looks evil. Look, a skull . . . a skeleton . . . a marooned ship," She said as Krys turned the page. Krys continued to turn the pages and Karen returned to her seat and finished eating her stew. They all sat in silence as Krys read parts of it out.
"Karen, take a look at this!" Tash called her over. Karen did as she was told.
"Oh my God!" Karen clapped a hand over her mouth. It was a list of names. The last name was Donald Gordon.
"Gordon, my God, Karen, that's your name!" Tash said.
"You know this 'Donald Gordon??'" Laura asked
"Don . . ." She trailed off and starred at the name in horror. Almost on que, the name turned red and began to drip like blood, it spelled out the words Consumite Furore. Tears began pouring from Karen's eyes and she screamed, then the world around her went black and she fell to the floor . . .
