The Vinery

The Vinery was located in Midway, Kentucky in 1997. Since our visit, the farm has undergone a change in ownership and moved its stallions to a newer barn. In fact, I am not even sure if this barn still exists, as a fire destroyed a barn in late 1999. No horses were hurt. If you have more info on the Vinery's recent changes, PLMK.

Anyway, The Vinery was a beautiful place with many cool stallions. It was originally a vinyard, thus the name Vinery.

BLACK TIE AFFAIR, Miswaki - Hat Tab Girl, by Al Hattab

BLACK TIE AFFAIR was Horse of the Year in 1991; he won the Breeder's Cup Classic and 17 other races, earning over $3 million in the process.

Black Tie Affair sired a great runner called FORMAL GOLD, who beat Skip Away 4 out of the six times they met. (WOW!) Black Tie Affair's current American stakes winner is LICENSE FEE.

Sadly, Black Tie Affair is no longer in this country. He is now at the East Stud in Japan.

STRIKE THE GOLD, 1991 KY Derby Winner

STRIKE THE GOLD was the final Derby winner bred by the legendary Calumet Farm. He won the Bluegrass Stakes prior to the Derby, then won the Pimlico Special the next year. He was the first Derby winner for trainer Nick Zito. Strike The Gold was ridden to victory in the '91 Derby by Chris Antley, who would gain Derby stardom once again in 1999 aboard Charismatic. STRIKE THE GOLD raced to the age of 5, the last Derby winner to do so until Silver Charm.

Strike the Gold showing off for our tour group. In 1999 Strike The Gold also left the US for Turkey. He is not the only Derby winner in Turkey, however. Sea Hero (1993) is also at stud at the Turkish Jockey Club.
