Research
Welcome to the Research page. On this page I will try to provide updates of the various research projects with which I am involved. Of course, priorities can change rapidly as new opportunities or requirements come along.
On reflection, it seems that the most sensible headline topic is 'Competitiveness,' specifically Thai competitiveness. Within that, a number of the existing projects fit in quite nicely, while others are separate or else slotted in where most appropriate. Hence:
Competitiveness
Education and Competitiveness
This centres on the conference paper that I wrote for the ICE Conference in Hat Yai, August 2004 (download it here). I hope to update and improve this version for submission to a scholarly journal.
Health Service and Competitiveness, Health Tourism
I have been thinking about this for a while and indeed tried to get it off the ground when I was at Mahidol - but of course there was no support available there. It has received some new impetus from the call for papers for the The Fifth Biennial Academy of Marketing/American Marketing Association Joint
Conference in Dublin, July 2005. So, I will be submitting something for this, hopefully of a suitably high quality.
Labour Markets and Competitiveness
This has been a longstanding interest and there are several strands involved in this. The first part is the paper presented at the Khon Kaen Conference: The Changing Mekong: Pluralistic Societies under Siege, July 2004. Download it here.
Other Industries
Resulting from an agreement to complete some entries for the Encyclopaedia of Industrial Revolutions, I will have some information on other industries such as rubber and silk. So that information should be useful in part for the overall assessment of competitiveness.
OTOP
I have submitted a small proposal to the management here to conduct a study on this topic and requesting funds for an assistant to help with establishing appointments and doing translation work and so forth. It is a subject that is worth investigating in any case.
Small Countries and Competitiveness
This project is in collaboration with Gordon Smith and seems to have been hanging around for ages without much progress. It involves a comparative study of four small states, UAE, Switzerland, Ireland and Switzerland and an assessment of their competitiveness. I have previously written something about the nature of competitiveness which is extracted here. I have also made a start towards definition of small states here. Analyses of the four relevant states will appear here in due course, together with other material.
Regional Cooperation
Vietnam-Laos
Chinese in Thailand
I include this as a possible book-length study, since the suggestion was well received with potential publishers in Singapore, as well as various smaller projects. This needs research assistance to get off the ground, at the moment.
Other Things
History: East Asian History articles are now published at Suite 101.
Commentary
Why Is the Salween River Being Dammed?
The Government of Thailand's Anti-Drugs Campaign
Thai Migrant Workers in the Middle East
Pak Moon Dam
Daily commentary is now available on my weblog.
I will make some effort to try to keep this page updated - more so than in the past. Honest.
Send me some email if you wish. Any questions so far?
