Our second largest antelope species next to the Eland.  Both sexes have horns but the bulls have longer and thicker horns than the cows.

Bulls can be loners or they form bachelor herds.  Dominant bulls look after their herds of cows and calves and protect them from other bulls.

They are not commonly found in South Africa and are on the endangered species list.  The reason for this being their very particular habitat needs.  They require open woodlands in which their are open areas through which they can move, grazing taller stands of grass (0,5 to 1,5m).  They need water regularly.

They are very susceptible to the dangerous anthrax disease. There are about 300 of them left in the Kruger National Park and most of them have been inoculated by the Parks Board.
