Oribi
They prefer the open grassy plains of the highveld. Once widely distributed in South Africa their preferred habitat has been reduced by the planting of crops and plantations. Another danger to their numbers are poachers who hunt them with dogs. Presently their survival is dependant on the goodwill of farmers who set aside a bit of land for them. These little antelope have a fine silky coat much shorter in summer than in winter. They are territorial and use the secretions from a gland underneath their eyes to mark their territories. They seldom, if ever, drink water, obtaining all their moisture requirements from succulent plant parts. |
