INTERESTING CASE OF THE MONTH December 2003 case A
FNA breast mass, 68-year old female: medullary carcinoma
Many large and pleomorphic tumor cells surrounded by lymphocytes and some plasma cells. Smears quite cellular, and all with the same pattern. Cytoplasm somewhat abundant, and a few multinucleated large malignant cells. The differential diagnosis of this type of lesion includes poorly differentiated ductal cell carcinoma with lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate, and malignant lymphoma (when only the inflammatory infiltrate is identified). The surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis of medullary carcinoma of the breast.
