INTERESTING CASE OF THE MONTH May 2005
Left knee synovial fluid aspiration, 74-year old male: uric acid crystals, gout arthritis.
The smears of the synovial fluid show many needle shape crystals: both in M-G-G and Papanicolaou stained ones. The use of polarized light shows them quite nicely. The patient has a serum uric acid value of 9.3mg/dL, confirming the diagnosis of gout.
