Lung Hydatidosis: FNA right upper lobe lung mass, 41-year old male

Drs. Prolla and Diehl's INTERESTING CASE OF THE MONTH January 2003 case A

Hooklets, typical of Echinococcus granulosus, FNA right lung mass, 1,000x Papanicolaou staining

Lung cytology: The diagnostic smear showed necrotic debris, and some isolated hooklets, typical of Echinococcus granulosus infected cyst. CT and MRI scans (liver, brain, bones, etc.), and extensive US imaging did not reveal any other lesion. The serologic ELISA immunology test (EIA) was positive. The surgeons did complete cystectomy procedure with the appropriate chemotherapeutic agent coverage. The patient is fine, and being followed for possible but unlikely recurrence of new cysts. The south of Brazil is an area with high prevalence of hydatidosis ( like neighboring Uruguay and Argentina), but fine needle aspiration of cystic lesions is considered a safe procedure.
