Who Am I? The Forging of Identity and Selfhood in Post-Colonial Asian America
Hi; my name is Justin Chen, and I was born in Washington, D.C. to proud parents Wen and Grace Chen. I sometimes live with them in McLean, VA, but I spend most of the year in New Haven, CT.
Here are my Asian qualities:
- I play the violin
- I used to play the piano
- I majored in Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry
- I am going to medical school
- I have the eyesight of a geriatric bat
- I list "tennis" as my favorite sport on forms and surveys
- I wear a wide-brimmed conical straw hat to shade my head from the sun's rays while I labor industriously in the fields
- I harvest rice and also manufacture intricate electronic equipment
- I am inscrutable
- Because of a culturally induced unwillingness to display genuine emotion, I subconsciously alienate friends and loved ones with my inappropriately harsh and autocratic manner
- I live in a pagoda lit by red paper lanterns
- I love bubble tea, Hondas, the color black, Pho, and video games
- My family goes to the Price Club as a family outing and uses old grocery bags as trash can liners
Here are my not-so-Asian qualities:
- I am majoring in literature with a focus in late-18th-century German romanticism
- I play the trumpet
- I want to own a Volkswagen at some point
- I am bad at math! (yes, even multivariable calculus)
- I use standard capitalization and spelling (n0nE 0f th1z b1znAtch)
But I digress... I recently graduated from Yale, where I was for some reason editor-in-chief of The Yale Herald, Yale's undergraduate weekly newspaper. Also, I was a coordinator of The Musical Cure, a volunteer outreach program that brings music to New Haven soup kitchens, nursing homes, and hospitals, and I volunteerd in the Geriatrics Department at the Yale/New Haven Hospital, where I was occasionally mistaken for a Hispanic.
While all of those things have kept me pretty busy over the past four years, it is now time to move on and never think of them again. What does my future hold? The Yale School of Medicine, where all the classes are Pass/Fail and tests are taken on the Internet, at one's leisure. This summer, I have done nothing but be extraordinarily lazy, in preparation for working in beautiful Erlangen, Germany next year. I'll be doing clinical research on lupus and atherosclerosis with Dr. Christian Antoni and Drs. Bernhard and Karin Manger. I'll also hopefully be traveling all around Europe and eating lots of chocolate!
Other things that you should know about me are that I like to drink but haven't really figured out how to stop once I get started, and I love small fat animals, including babies. I enjoy the poetry of Milton, Yeats, and Wallace Stevens. Additionally, I am a huge nerd.
That's really all I have to share for now, I'm afraid. If you'd like to find out more, send me an email containing a nude photo!
