| Started with 'Good Samaritan Story' from Jesus video Got them to close their eyes and think of someone that has been an enemy. I asked them, "What would you do if you saw that person lying in the city needing some help?" From babyhood, we show that we always try and look out for ourselves first - get things for ourselves and do things for selfish motives. Matrix example - humanity is in bondage to sin. Most people live for themselves to a certain extent, but will help others when required to. People have different reasons for helping people. Many good decent people pick and choose which causes and people are worthy of their help and which aren't! Some people help others for religious reasons - a lot of people believe that if they can do their good deed for the day they will somehow score points with their god or if they do good things for others they will get good karma back on themselves. These are selfish reasons. Many great politicians and religious leaders have said that they were there to help the people, but when they've tasted power, they have changed. That is where you see the excesses of the French Revolution and the Spanish Inquisition. Even in Australia's politics, we've seen it with people like Pauline Hanson. One political leader, who is still seen as a great leader by his countrymen twenty-something years after his death, once said, "Hence, selfishness, slacking, corruption, seeking the limelight, and so on, are most contemptible, while selflessness, working with all one's energy, whole-hearted devotion to public duty, and quiet hard work will command respect." Show video with quotation. That political leader was Chairman Mao Tse Tung. Even though this leader did many things when he first came to power to draw the country together, due to his own exaggerated sense of self-importance, China is even now still recovering from the devastation that was brought on the country during the Cultural Revolution - massive economic disasters, famines, the murder of those who would speak out, and the resulting silence of a generation of precious souls. Chairman Mao was quoted as having said, "As for people who are politically backward, Communists should not slight or despise them, but should befriend them, unite with them, convince them and encourage them to go forward." Yet it was in his Cultural Revolution that many scholars and intellectuals were subjected to humiliations, which drove some of them to suicide. Show video of quotation and picture of Cultural Revolution humiliations. Mao was one that was also quoted as having said, "Every Communist must grasp the truth, "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun." Show video of quotation and the pictures representing Chinese Communism. One leader has shown Himself to be different. That leader is Jesus Christ. When speaking of greatness in leadership He said, "You've observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. It's not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not be served--and then to give away his life in exchange for the many who are held hostage." As He shared often on serving people, He showed it with His actions right up to the last moment. Show video of Jesus helping people. Remember how we talked about doing something to help an enemy when they were in need, well, this is what Jesus had to say about that Show video of Sermon on the Mount - section about loving enemies. And this is how He demonstrated that. By paying for our wrongdoings by His death on the cross. That was His ultimate act of service. Show video of Jesus' sufferings and death with Him saying, "Father forgive them" When Jesus thought about serving people, He didn't pick and choose who He would serve. He served people from all levels of society and cried out for the forgiveness of those who hated Him so much that they would kill Him. |
