Dear Friends,

It is hard to believe that Jacob’s Creek Family Camp is less than five months away!  So mark your calendars for July 30th – August 2nd, 2009.  We are excited to have this new weekend for a number of reasons; it doesn’t conflict with the July 4th weekend or Canada Day, and it doesn’t compete with any of the ANC summer camps and sports camps, or any other Church camps!  We are very hopeful that it will become a weekend that you all can mark on your calendars every year, and make Jacob’s Creek a part of your annual summer plans, without having to miss any other fun events.

It promises to be another great camp as we focus on discussing the truths of the Lord’s Word, coming to a better understanding of them, and being inspired to live according to them.   With that in mind, the theme for our camp this summer is "Prayer."  Obviously the topic is broad and discussions could go in many different directions, but some of the questions that intrigue me are: Should we pray for others?  How effective is prayer, does it really have the power to make your life better?  Should we have public prayers?  What does it mean when prayers seemingly go unanswered? What makes a good prayer?

The amount the Writings for the New Church have to say on prayer is truly staggering, and as we delve into the subject, we might find that we feel a little overwhelmed.  So as a starting point, I would like to share one of the most simple and basic definitions of prayer given to us by the Lord.

“Regarded in itself prayer is talking to God and at the same time some inner view of the things that are being prayed for. Answering to this there is something akin to an influx into the perception or thought of the person's mind, which effects a certain opening of his internals towards God.” (AC 2535).

The thing that I love about this teaching is that after investigating in greater detail all the various doctrines concerning prayer, we can come back to the basic truth, that prayer is simply “talking to God.”   This year we will do our best to answer the question the disciples posed to the Lord after they saw Him praying, when they said, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1).

The staff providing instruction from the Word on this year’s subject of “prayer” will be Rev. Stephen Cole, Rev. Matthew Genzlinger, and myself, with assistance provided by Rev. Dan Heinrichs.  In addition to the main morning lectures, we will be offering two afternoon electives to stimulate your thinking as well!

Our camp director this year is Blake Messman, and she will be ably assisted by her husband Paul, and Jamie and Julie Uber, along with lots of help from our dedicated crew of volunteers. This year will be our 17th annual camp, so let’s make it a great celebration!  We thank you for planning to come and participate, and we urge you to register early so you don’t miss out!  May our Lord Jesus Christ draw close to us as we gather to reflect on the truths of His WORD and pray for the further establishment of His New Church upon the earth.

We look forward to seeing you at camp!
