The Trip to Syria |

In April 2001 we took a very interesting one-week trip to Syria where we visited Haifa Shalabi and her daughter Mouna Samayli. Haifa has been a friend of my family since we lived in Alexandria, Egypt in 1962 where she was a student. We covered more than 1,000 miles in Syria with Yasser, a guide/driver recruited by Mouna (see map).

The Roman-style ruins of Palmyra in the desert northeast of Damascus. Palmyra was an important Roman colony during the third century AD and was an independent city-state before and after. The ruins at Palmyra are very impressive and include a column-lined street almost a mile long, the Temple of Bel, a theater, courtyards, baths, and tombs (funerary towers as well as underground tombs). |
