25 Weeks
October 8, 2002

Baby hasn't been moving as much as it used to these last few days. Now it's back to what I consider a normal amount of movement, like I feel it when I'm sitting down or laying down, but not all day long. It's a nice change :-)

Pretty excited about Thursday. Deb and Henry are coming for my regular prenatal appt with Dr L, then we are all driving down to Calgary where we will get the ultrasound done. Can't wait to find out if I've been right all along or if my instincts aren't so good after all. Either way I'll be happy and I know D&H will be happy with either gender too.

The other day my son's playschool teacher asked me about the pregnancy. She asked if I was hoping for a boy or a girl so I told her that this was a surrogate pregnancy. She was so great about it and gave me a big hug and told me she thought it was so fantastic. She even told me she offered many years ago to do this for her sister, but her sister ended up conceiving on her own. It's surprising how many women tell me they have considered being a surrogate mom before.

Took some more pictures yesterday.

I'm 25 weeks pregnant

I will have a long update today! I had my appt with Dr L yesterday as well as the ultrasound and visit with Deb and Henry. Lots to tell!

I'll start with the prenatal check-up. All went well. D&H were there and heard the baby's heartbeat for the first time. It was around 160bpm so I smiled and told them "see, it's a girl!" I was measuring big again, she had to measure twice to make sure she was getting the right measurement. I forgot to ask what it was, but I'll measure myself soon (I usually get the same measurments as the Drs do) and I'll share that soon. I told her about my itching and she said it could be a liver problem or it could just be regular pregnancy itching. She is sending me for some blood tests to rule out the liver problem. It's also time for all the regular blood tests again and the glucose test as well.

We went out for a nice lunch and talked more about things. We all have different ideas about when my due date is and we like to tease each other about it. According to my calendar it is Jan 21 that I am due, according to Deb's it's Jan 20 and according to Henry who hasn't checked out a pregnancy calendar but refuses to believe that a pregnancy isn't exactly 9 months from date of conception to birth believes my due date to be at the very end of January. It is funny as we know exactly when the baby was conceived, yet we all have different ideas of when I should be due. And of course at lunch I made mention of how the baby was definitely a girl.

We made the drive to Calgary and had a nice visit. We got to the ultrasound place a little early so we had to wait quite a while. We saw the lady who was in before me come out and both Deb and I wondered if she was actually pregnant. She was wearing regular jeans (not maternity ones) and had just the slightest bump that was the baby. We went into the exam room and the baby was still on the screen and it looked to be about the same size as this baby. So she must have been just about as far along as me, but she was just so tiny! I think after having a few babies my body has just given up so I get bigger faster.

The ultrasound lady talked to us first about what we would be seeing on the screen and asked some questions about the surrogacy...everyone is always very curious about that. She showed us pictures of what to expect to see and all that. Then I hopped up on the table, which was terrific! Instead of those hard tables like they usually have where you have to lay flat on your back (not exactly too comfy when you are pregnant), it was a nice padded reclining type seat.

She pressed record on the video (which is so cool to watch now!) and started the ultrasound. I don't think Henry really expected to see the baby so clearly or to see it move so much; he really seemed quite amazed at it all. We got to see the baby yawn many times, suck on it's fingers and even give us the finger once!

Then it came time to check the gender. She moved the wand and gave us a big close-up between the legs. Much to my surprise we saw a penis!
IT's a BOY!!! I wish I could have seen my face at that moment. I was totally shocked! D&H are quite happy about it being a boy, that's what they've thought it was all along. Deb and Henry and Doug (the twins' dad) are the only ones who guessed right.

The baby looks as though he is very comfortable where he is. He is laying sideways across my tummy with his legs stretched out and crossed at the ankles and even had one hand behind his head. I think he is happy in there because he has so much room seeing as I just had twins last year.

We have many pictures from the ultrasound, I'll share one here and if you'd like to see the rest,

I had went shopping a few days ago to get a gift for the baby. I was so sure it was a girl I was just going to get something pink, but then decided I really should get a boy one too just in case. It was a little picture frame (one was pink and one was blue) and a little stuffed puppy. So I left the boy one in the car for them to find after we had supper. Good thing I decided to get the blue one after all!!!

So at not one point in the day did this little man decide to move for his mom to feel it. He's quite stubborn :-)

But all looks well for a healthy baby so we are all very pleased! Can't wait until January!
