JOHN BACK
FROM
SINGAPORE
BALI SATURDAY: Last night at 10.30 pm I returned home from 3 days in Sing- apore. The Australian dollar has certainly taken a battering now only .97c Singapore to the AUD. Makes everything  more expensive there. Earlier in the year whilst I was there it was $1.10 to the AUD. Wed I arrived at my out of town hotel, the $45 per night, but nice Astra in Paya Lebar (see map) at around 6.30 pm after a comfortable flight from Bali.  Thanks to Yong Fu’s special seat allocation. Full plane but 2 seats to myself. The hotel is near the Malay Village.

MALAY VILLAGE
About 10 mins from down- town on the MTR.  I caught the MRT train down to Bugis St where I enjoyed a very expensive but nice dinner of barbecued king prawn.

BUGIS STREET

MTR TRAIN SPEED TO DOWNTOWN SINGAPORE
I was talking to the owner who told me that he must now pay  $6000 per month for his rather rundown shop. His cook costs $4000 per month and the 2 waiters $3000 each. In the evening I went to a “spit and sawdust” Chinese restaurant near my hotel. Enjoyed a Beef  Claypot. Thursday went shopping at  Peoples Park shopping complex in Chinatown. Far cheaper than Orchard road. Very rarely do you see a tourist there. Easy to get to, a short walk from Outram station. I walked until my feet could stand it any  longer. A large bottle of beer usually costs $6 SIN,  however at the airport a  pot costs $7. Friday I spent the afternoon in Orchard Road wondering how anybody can afford the prices. Caught my flight from terminal 1 at 7pm and readied myself with a few red wines to do battle with Indonesian Immigration and Customs. Paid the usual $10
corruption and all was fine.
The plane was full of Indians all looking forward to a holiday in Bali.  Arrived at the KHO around 10.30pm, we had  a small party with Jamal, Deni and I until dawn.
POOR GUS
INDONESIA: Indonesian president Wahid (Gus Dur) following his promise to the MPR this week announced his new cabinet. Dubbed by the press here as all the presidents men. Megawati was clearly not amused. refusing to read out the appointments for the President on live Tv she went home. The President cracked a joke that she wasn’t there  because she had to take a mandy. (shower – Indonesian custom in the afternoon) He continued to crack, well that’s women for you. Megawati’s party which won over 32% of the vote are not represented on the new cabinet. The Queen is displeased and waiting in the wings. How long can Gus hang on? When will Mega make her move. Stay tuned.
Denny: The home page looks good. Simple and loads fast. I notice
that the geocities site doesn't have a grouping as such anymore, like 'hollywood' etc.
Harold Aspinal: I was at a BBQ over the weekend and met Ian Davey whom
I have not seen for ages.  He informed me you are now living in Indonesia & have divested yourself of the business on St Kilda Rd. I have been to Indonesia several times (lost count) and was last there in 1997 when I spent 2 relaxing months in the sun.  I rented a house in Seminyak for the duration, and met some people from the local 'expatriate' community and also saw some copies of a local expat news- paper.  All quite interesting.  At times I also toyed with the idea of living there (or the Philippines  -  another place I have been to often) but in the end decided I would probably go mad after a while or maybe go on the booze.  Also I completely distrust medical & dental services in those countries.  I am now living 'out-of-town' in a nice house in Mt Martha  -  on TOP of Mt Martha to be exact.  Prior to this I had two years living in Sorrento.  I am in a semi-retired situation. Rochelle:  'll miss your birthday by a week.  We arrive very late on Friday 1 September and are staying in  Nusa Dua. Will certainly keep the Wed. night free.Have a great birthday on Monday and look forward to seeing you soon.
DEWA BAGONG
STRUCK DOWN
WITH TYPHOID
BALI:  Our friend Dewa Bagong  (not to be confused with the other Dewa who is actually Dewa Bagong's cousin) is very ill with Typhoid fever. He has returned to his village in central Bali. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Ian D: coming from Moe via another friends computor. What one does to get a message out. As you can guess the machine is not back yet. I am on route to Birnsdale. Have a good time in Singapore. I will give you more detailed news when I get to Canberra . Clive of England: You have certainly been keeping busy on the web site.
Excellent pages on Bali and Lombok. I have added a new Bali Info page to my site with a map as you sugested to show the location of the vliias. We will be returning to Bali for the first 2 weeks in November i.e. from 30th  Oct to 12th Nov and hope to come and visit you and Jamal at the KHO. The house should be finished by then - we hope! George: I love you take care great internet home page, I especially loved the Bali information.
Sei in Osaka: hi there. how have you been doing recently?
is everything going fine??l bet it is. anyway, still my girlfriend and l have not decided where and when to take a trip. hmmmm too shit. l am really dying to go there again, and have fun and good hug with all of  you guys. of course if you dont mind. hahaha. Geof  in Canberra: Good to hear from you again.  I read all the newsletters and find them interesting.  Yes my new house is fine, because of the central heating it has stayed very warm during the winter, much better than the old house.
JAKARTA: From Brad in Jakarta Hey guys !
My Kavling Polri (street) is buzzing
MEGA
with excitement this morning as the girl at the end of the street is getting married. The street was teaming with police when I got up at 6:30am, I thought something serious had happened. I was very obliging when the girls parents asked permission to park on our property due it is a small street and parking is not plentiful. Then someone asked if they could use the garage as they saw me departing for the day for the office. Turns out they are reserving my garage for Megawati Soekarno Putri - the vice president of Indonesia he is due to arrive at the house in 15 minutes. Michael is going to try and entice her in for coffee and cake !! More Next week! So  she didn't go home for a mandy after all!

Joke from Bradley, in Brisbane: A man
suspected his wife of  seeing another man.
So he hired a famous Chinese detective,
'Mee Lookee Yu', to watch and  report on
any activities that might develop. A few days later he received this report:
Most honorable sir:
You leave house.
He come house.
I watch.
He and she leave house.
I follow.
He and she get on train.
I follow.  He and she go in hotel.
I climb tree - look in window.
He kiss she.
She kiss he.
He strip she.
She strip he.
He play with she.
She play with he.
I play with me.
Fall out of tree, not see.
