| I have seen many references from many cemeteries about the famous generals and politicians buried in their respective places of interment. Nobody highlights the thousands of ordinary soldiers who also died for their country. This site highlights the final resting place of nearly 7,000 Confederate soldiers buried in the Confederate Section of Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.
They died fighting against the United States of America, but that was a different time when the nation as we know it today did not yet exist. These soldiers, and some civilians, died fighting for their country as they knew it in the early 1860s. In their own eyes, they were patriots and loyal. I wanted to make sure their names are not lost, particularly since their descendents have gone on to play important, even pivotal, roles in our nation's history since the War Between the States. As our own ancestors, they deserve to be remembered. After years of procrastination, I have transcribed the Register of the Confederate Dead Interred in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Va. published in 1869 by the Hollywood Memorial Association into a data base. This is for the snuffies. |
