You will write, revise, edit, and submit your essays in a series of at least three evolving drafts:
- Essay _.1: Essay _.1 is the first full draft of each Essay to be submitted and marked.
It is not unusual to be told that your first draft is an "early-stage" draft, which means that you have more than 50% of the work still ahead of you.
Don't let that discourage
you. You will receive higher-order feedback pointing to the top priorities
you should work on as you revise your Essay for the next submission.
Save this first version, together with the feedback you receive, for
resubmission with Essay _.2 and for possible inclusion in your final
Portfolio.
- Essay _.2: Create Essay _.2 by revising Essay _.1.
When you submit Essay _.2, attach to it the marked Essay _.1 showing
all my comments. You will receive further revision feedback as well
as specific editing feedback on this second draft, comments that point
to the top priorities you should address as you revise for draft
_.3. Save this version, together with the feedback you receive, for
possible inclusion in your final Portfolio.
- Essay _.3: Create Essay _.3 by further revising and editing
Essay _.2. If you decide to include
this Essay in your final Portfolio, version _.3 (or
_.4, _.5, etc., if you act smartly and continue revising) demonstrates
your best writing in this Essay's development.
Specifications
- Length: The first draft of each essay should be at least 800 words in length and the second and subsequent drafts should be at least 1200 words. (To count words, use the tools menu in MS Word.)
- Title: The assignment is called Personal Inquiry Essay, or Ethnographic Research Essay, or Gender Relations Research Essay,
but you should create a title that is specific to your essay--distinguishing
your essay from those of your classmates--and that informs and invites
readers to your essay.
- References: Credit ideas and phrases that come from other
sources by citing each source at its point of use in your essay, and
include a reference list at the end of your essay. You may use either
the MLA or APA guidelines. For details about these guidelines, see the "MLA" or "APA" tabs
in A Writer's Reference, or the appendix in The Curious Reader.
- Page numbering: Number all pages after page 1 so that readers'
feedback can refer to specific sections of your essay.
- Line spacing: Use at least 1.5 spacing.
- Cover page: To save paper, you need not create a cover page,
but the first page of your document should open with the following:
- your essay's specific title
- the assignment name: Personal Inquiry Essay, or Ethnographic Research Essay, or Gender Relations Research Essay
- the essay draft: _.1 or _.2 or _.3
- your full name
- your e-mail address
- the course number: English 16
- your section number
- your instructor's name: John Killoran
- Printing: Submit only word-processed, not hand-written, work.
Hand-written submissions will not be read or marked. Print your essay single sided so that
we can easily read, comment on, and (in some cases) photocopy your essay.
- Binding: Use a paper clip, staple, or loose folder to hold
the sheets of paper together. Do not bind your essay in such a way that
makes it difficult to write in any of the margins.
- Submission deadlines: Each draft of this essay is due at the
beginning of class. To avoid late penalties, write, revise, edit, and
print each essay draft well before its deadline and arrive to class
on time.
- Late penalties:
Late essays will be penalized with one "no-no" (see "no-nos" on syllabus) for each part or whole 24-hour period overdue,
starting approximately one minute after the stated deadline and continuing over weekends and holidays.
If you cannot come to campus, submit a late assignment by e-mail; the time stamp on your e-mail will be considered your submission time.
Then hand in a printout of the assignment the next time you are on campus.
