The Sunset Music Ministry, known better as the Music Team, is responsible for the praise and worship segment of the DCBC Sunset Service. We also play for the P&W portions of other gatherings when requested. Structure There are ten of us in the team, from college students to yuppies. The ministry head and her assistant manage the team's rehearsals, outings and other activities, and the team's direction. Some members are also tasked with looking after the instruments/sound system, the logbook and the team's files. Newcomers usually spend their first rehearsals observing how the team works and trying to fit in with the rest of the members. Activities We have weekly devotions to ensure our grounding in the Word of God and monthly Team Times to assess the team's direction. To ensure that our skills improve, we have weekly music lessons and bi-weekly rehearsals. We also attend special trainings like the ones organized by Windsong Ministries. We also go out on concerts, usually subsidized by the church or other sponsors (mainly Ate Shii), to be exposed to various music forms or other praise and worship teams or to just hang around and develop the relationships within the team. Finally, the team is involved in DCBC's annual Cantata, which is on December. We also coordinate with the church's other services for the P&W on service anniversaries and on Easter. We also get requested to handle the P&W of other organizations, especially DCF, of which most of the team are also members. Vision/Mission Our vision is to give glory to God through edifying, life-changing and God-centered music in praise and worship. We aim to achieve our vision through

History The creation of a music team was a vision of Shiilah Arcilla. When the DCBC Sunset Service was established in 1994, there was no praise and worship (P&W) team. For around three years, the pastor juggled leading P&W with a few students who could play the guitar. Shiilah joined DCBC in 1998. For around three years, Sunset Service had a "music pair"-the pianist (her) and whoever would be the songleader. She then began praying for a music team. In July 2001, the Mongo Boys (named after the improvised shaker-a film canister filled with mongo beans-they used) was formed. Arvin Alfonso, Carlomer Camannong, Eigen John Ignacio, Julius Velasco and Shiilah were the the Sunset Service's first official music team. By August, Paul Jeffrey Escano and Christine Joy Nogra joined the team. Shiilah continued to lead the team for three more years, sustained and prompted by God. The vision God gave her progressed from the formation of a team to development of skills to recruitment of more members. The team underwent workshops like the ones organized by Windsong Ministries. Several batches also tried their hand in the team. Bryan Antigua, Nellie Reyes, Joan Rachel Romero, Bertrand Aldous Santillan, LG Titular and Jeremy Ryan Yap had their own months/years of service before leaving the team. Butch Pang, who is now the Sunset Service's facilitator (and Shiilah's fiancee) also first served the Lord in the Music Team. There had been three batches of musicians since the first, the latest joined in late 2004-early 2005. In 2004, after graduating and around seven years in the P&W ministry, Shiilah decided to pass on the management of the Music Team. In July, Shiilah groomed Aldous Santillan for the leadership. However, problems arose-schedules, among others-so the responsibility returned to Shiilah's shoulders. By October, Shiilah began mentoring her new prospect, Junette Galagala. Shiilah officially transferred the task of managing the team to Junette in November. Most of the older musicians had left, except for the songleaders and the youngest batch-who were still freshmen then-took over their places. With a new team and a new leader, the team took on a new journey and it has almost been a year since then. Shiilah still mentors and trains the team, along with Butch, Eigen and until his departure for Canada last month, Ryan. To God be the glory! |
