Jeff Beach's Home Page
Hello!
My name is Jeff Beach  I am a member of the Varmint Hunters Association (VHA) since 1997and a member of the NRA since1998.
I went on an unguided hunt to Alaska on September 17-25 of 2000 for caribou.  This web page was started because I am writing book about the unguided caribou hunt.  My niche for the book is that I took my experiances and use them to inform others of the equipment that I took on the trip as well as the equipment that I forgot to take.

Since this hunt I have gotten into Bench Rest competition shooting with 6mm PPC, had another child, and started to go out west to Montana, to hunt mule deer, whitetail, and antelope.  I have recently applied to Wyoming and have started to buy bonus point for other western states.

I am looking forward to spring to get after the ground hogs again which is my favorite hunting still.
Because equipment is so important in Alaska I spent many hours reviewing what equipment to take and what the cost of each piece was compared to the value received.  This took many hours and I think it will be rewarding to anyone who is thinking about going on a big game hunt guided or unguided the equipment will be the same.
I go over what safety/ first aid  items I took, GPS, Pack Frames, boots, rain gear, rifle, ammo, wardrobe etc., and then discribe how my assumtions stacked up to the actual need.

I have a friend who told me once "You have to learn from other peoples mistakes because you will never live long enough to make them all yourself".  I hope you will heed his advice and mine and give me a e-mail discribing your interest in the book (50pgs) and any other information about the hunt.

Here is a 315 inch Alaskan Caribou taken in 2000.

This caribou was taken with a Winchester model 70 in .270 caliber.  I used Nosler 140 grain polymer tips.  This load worked perfectly and is powerful enough to break the sholder and drop the animal in its tracks.  This was an unguided hunt and we had a very good hunt.  We got three animals 315, 325, 357 inch respecitivly.   I have wrote a book about this unguided hunt and if you would like to take a hunt like this it would be a great resource.  Please e-mail me if you are interested in it.
