Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

Allies

Jack Wade – Joe Don Baker

Jack Wade is a CIA agent who meets James Bond while in St. Petersburg in GoldenEye. He initially is disgusted with Bond, being a “stiff-assed Brit,” but they soon come to enjoy eachother’s company. Wade informs him on Janus and Zukovsky, taking him to the latter.

He then shows up in Cuba to deliver some gadgets from Q, and then arrives with the marines at the end of the film when Bond and Natalya are trying to get some time alone.

In Tomorrow Never Dies, he welcomes Bond when he arrives at the airbase and escorts him over to the officials. He is then present on the plane when Bond prepares for his HALO jump.

Memorable lines:

“What are you; the weather man?”

“For crying out loud, just another stiff-assed Brit, your secret codes and passwords.”

“Hey Bond, you do any gardening?”

“He didn’t even say good-bye.”

Dr. Dave Greenwalt – Colin Stinton

Dr. Dave Greenwalt is a US Air Force expert, working with the GPS location systems. He uses the GPS encoder Bond gives to him to see that it has been tampered with. This then allows him to find the real location where the HMS Devonshire sunk in the sea.

Villians

Elliot Carver – Jonathan Pryce

Elliot Carver is a megalomaniac who dominates the world’s media. He has influences in newspapers, TV, radio and over many world leaders. He has the ability to reach any human being in the world with the exception of the Chinese, which he soon intends to fix.

Known as the Emperor of the Air, his satellites and other forms of technology make him a very powerful media mogul. He blackmails and tricks others to get ahead. Now he plans to set up World War III to increase his media ratings and to get exclusive broadcasting rights in China for the next hundred years.

He kills his wife, Paris, when he realizes her past relationship with James Bond and tries to have Bond killed as well. Carver dies at the end of the film when Bond drives the sea drill into him.

Memorable lines:

“Good morning, my golden retrievers. What kind of havoc shall the Carver Media Group create in the world today?”

“There's no news like bad news.”

“Let the mayhem begin.”

“Delicious.”

Mr. Stamper – Gotz Otto

Stamper is Carver’s head of security. Intimidating and magnificently strong, Stamper becomes quite a threat for James Bond. He makes Bond uncomfortable at the party and is fiercely loyal to Carver, protecting him at all times.

He fights Bond on the missile at the end of the film and dies when it explodes.

Henry Gupta – Ricky Jay

Henry Gupta is a technological genius and practically invented techno-terrorism. He is the one that takes control of the GPS Encoder for Carver. While quiet, Gupta is very important to the project.

When Bond takes him hostage, Carver merely shoots him dead, as he has outlived his usefulness.

Dr. Kaufman – Vincent Schivelli

Dr. Kaufman is the torturer and also the teacher of the craft to Stamper. He has killed Paris in James Bond’s hotel room and also plans to do the same to Bond.

He is a prime assassin and known all around the world for his tactics. He’s especially good at the celebrity overdose, apparently. Bond outsmarts him with the electric shock in his telephone, taking the chance to then shoot him.

Memorable lines:

“Wait! I’m just a professional doing a job.”

General Chang – Philip Kwok

General Chang teams up with Carver to take over China after the missile lands, killing their leaders. He is seen in Carver’s Saigon complex, but then is not heard of again in the film.

Girls

Wai Lin – Michelle Yeoh

Wai Lin works towards the same objective that James Bond does: to investigate Elliot Carver and work for peace. She is an agent working for the People’s Security Force in China and is just as adept in the field as Bond is. They cross eachother’s paths several times, such as at the party and then later breaking into the offices and searching for the Devonshire.

They finally team up together and go on a wild motorcycle chase and then ward off enemies in a hidden warehouse on the streets. They track down Carver’s stealthship and create mayhem aboard it in order to stop Carver. Wai Lin is then caught by Stamper, but rescued by Bond when he jumps down into the water, leaving Stamper to die with the missile.

Memorable lines:

“Don’t get any ideas.”

Paris Carver – Teri Hatcher

An old flame of Bond’s, she is now married to media mogul Elliot Carver. They meet at the party, Paris quickly letting Bond know her feelings about when he left her. It becomes apparent that she still has feelings for Bond however when she goes to his apartment the night of the party and then later gives him some information about a secret entrance to Carver’s facility.

Carver learns of her deceit and arranges a meeting for her with the doctor. Bond later finds her dead in his hotel room.

Memorable lines:

“How about the words I’ll be right back?”

“What was it James; did I get too close?”

Carver’s PR Assistant – Daphne Deckers

The assistant to Carver at his party, she tries to see that things go smoothly. When the power outage caused by Bond occurs however, Carver furiously fires her from employment when she answers that she doesn’t know how it happened.

Professor Inga Bergstrom – Cecilie Thomsen

This Danish professor is giving a lesson of sorts to Bond when a call comes through from headquarters, summoning him. He unfortunately is then forced to cut the lesson short.

Memorable lines:

“Little?”

Gadgets

Walther PPK – (Dr. No – Tomorrow Never Dies)

The Walther PPK is first issued to James Bond in Dr. No by Major Boothroyd, when his Beretta is taken away. It delivers shots like a brick through a plate-glass window and has excellent stopping power. It has saved the life of James Bond on many of his missions and has been used to stop several of his main adversaries.

Bond has lost the PPK on numerous missions, always getting a new replacement from Q Branch. Professor Dent is the first unlucky victim of the powerful handgun in the famous scene in Dr. No.

The Walther PPK is 7.65mm and carries six rounds.

Omega Watch –

GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is not Enough, Die Another Day

This blue-faced Omega watch has been with Bond during some of the most recent James Bond films. It has been used for a variety of different missions and has often come through to help save the day.

In GoldenEye, the watch came in handy when Bond and Natayla were trapped inside the compartment of the abandoned train by Alec Trvelyan and Xenia Onatopp. Bond was able to use the laser built into the watch to cut through the hatch in the floor of the compartment. With only seconds to spare, Bond managed to cut through enough and kick down the hatch, allowing the two to just barely make a safe escape. Later in the film, Bond’s watch was disabled by Trevelyan, disarming the mines Bond had set around the headquarters in the process.

In Tomorrow Never Dies, James Bond came upon a new Omega watch in the arsenal of weapons and gadgets located in the bike shop as Wai Lin searched for the whereabouts of Carver’s stealth ship. Later in the film, he uses it to his advantage when he sets up a remote controlled grenade to cause a massive explosion while held at gunpoint by Carver.

In The World Is Not Enough, his watch is fitted with a grappling piton that can lift his body weight. Bond uses the watch in the field as a light source when he with Elektra after the snowfall, and again to lift Christmas and himself in the bunker.

In Die Another Day, the watch houses it’s detonator, which James Bond can trigger.

Walther P99 –

After using the Walther PPK for many, many missions, James Bond comes across the more powerful, slightly larger Walther P99 in the arsenal inside the bike shop in Tomorrow Never Dies. As he has wanted one from Q for quite some time, 007 makes the switch.

The Walther P99 is light and powerful. It carries 16 rounds of 9mm ammunition. It can be fitted with a silencer.

James Bond first uses the P99 in the second half of Tomorrow Never Dies. Its rapid rate of fire comes in handy for the vicious gunfights which were to follow during the finale.

It returned with Bond in The World is not Enough, playing a part in the precredits sequence and accompanying Bond for the rest of the film.

In Die Another Day, Bond uses the P99 during his VR training sequence at MI6 headquarters and later has the bullets from the gun stolen from him by the deceptive Miranda Frost.

Ericsson Cellphone –

This telephone was given to Bond by Q while explaining the features of it and his new BMW 750iL. The phone packed a variety of special features:

It housed a volt security system that was activated by the following strokes: ‘Recall, 3, Send’. It also had a fingerprint scanner which Bond could use to pose as someone else. The main feature was the ability of the phone was upon opening, its control pad for Bond to drive his BMW – by moving his finger across the panel.

Bond uses the phone to break into Carver’s newspaper centers, destroying cardkey locks and copying Gupta’s fingerprint to gain access to his office. He also used the phone’s security system to momentarily disable Kaufmann, when held at gunpoint.

Naturally, during the car park sequence, Bond was controlling his BMW via the cellphone while either outside of the car or in the backseat.

Sea Drill –

This powerful sea drill was three rotating razor-edged wheels, controlled on an engine cable, which could be manipulated by an officer on the stealth ship. The seadrill was used by Stamper to act as a torpedo dropped by Chinese MiG’s, and cut into the hull of the Devonshire. Once inside, it could be turned in any direction to create as much damage and havoc as necessary.

Bond used the sea drill in the end of the film to bring an end to media baron Elliot Carver.

GPS Encoder –

This supremely powerful GPS encoder was a small red box with a small LCD screen inside. It connected to satellites and radar, and could be used to interfere with the navigation of ships on the seas.

First seen in the hands of Henry Gupta, he later uses the encoder to send the Devonshire many miles off its projected course, without the crew of the ship even knowing.

Earring Lock Pick –

This small gadget was owned by Wai Lin and could be used to pick most common locks apart. When Wai Lin and Bond are showering together, handcuffed, she carefully unclips the earring and then picks the handcuff lock apart.

She later gives the earring to Bond to take off the handcuff on his wrist.

Quotes

Elliot Carver: Good morning, my golden retrievers. What kind of havoc shall the Carver Media Group create in the world today? News?

Man: Floods in Pakistan, riots in Paris, and a plane crash in California.

Elliot Carver: Excellent.

Elliot Carver: Mr. Jones, are we ready to release our new software?

Jones: Yes, sir. As requested, it's full of bugs, which means people will be forced to upgrade for years.

Elliot Carver: Outstanding.

Elliot Carver: Mr. Wallace, call the President. Tell him if he doesn't sign the bill lowering the cable rates, we will release the video of him with the cheerleader in the Chicago motel room.

Mr. Wallace: Inspired, sir.

Elliot Carver: And after he signs the bill, release the tape anyway.

Mr. Wallace: Consider him slimed.

Elliot Carver: There's no news like bad news.

James Bond: I always enjoyed learning a new tongue.

Moneypenny: You always were a cunning linguist, James.

Moneypenny: Don't ask.

M: Don't tell.

Admiral Roebuck: With all due respect, M, I think you don't have the balls for this job.

M: Maybe. But the advantage is, I don't have to think with them all the time.

Q: It's the insurance damage waiver for your beautiful new car. Will you need collision coverage?

James Bond: Yes

Q: Fire?

James Bond: Probably

Q: Property destruction?

James Bond: Definitely.

Q: Personal Injury?

James Bond: I hope not, but accidents do happen.

Q: They frequently do with you.

James Bond: Well, that takes care of the normal wear and tear. Will I need anymore protection?

Q: Only from me 007, unless you bring that car back in pristine order.

Q: Your new telephone. Talk here, listen here.

James Bond: So that's what I've been doing wrong for all these years.

James Bond: They'll print anything these days.

James Bond: Was it something I said?

Paris Carver: How about the words, I'll be right back?

Paris Carver: This job of yours...oh its murder on relationships.

Dr. Kaufman: My art is in great demand, Mr. Bond. I go all over the world. I am especially good at the celebrity overdose.

Dr. Kaufman: This is very embarrassing. It seems there is a red box they need in your car, they can't get it open. They want me to get you to tell how to open it. I feel like an idiot, I don't know what to say.

Dr. Kaufman: I am to torture you if you don't do it.

James Bond: Oh, you have a doctorate in that too?

Dr. Kaufman: No, no this is more like a hobby...but I'm very gifted.

James Bond: Oh, I believe you.

Elliot Carver: I rather like the last one. It isn't even mine.

Elliot Carver: Soon I'll have reached out to and influenced more people than anybody in the history of this planet, save God himself. And the best he ever managed was the Sermon on the Mount.

James Bond: You really are quite insane.

Elliot Carver: The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success.

Elliot Carver: According to Eastern philosophy, the body has twelve different chakra points. Energy centers, like the heart or genitals. The purpose of these implements is to probe those organs, inflicting the maximum amount of pain while keeping the victim alive for as long as possible.

Mr. Stamper: Dr. Kauffman's record was fifty-two hours. I'm hoping to break it.

James Bond: I would have thought watching your TV shows was torture enough.

Wai Lin: Don't get any ideas.

James Bond: I wouldn't dream of it.

James Bond: You were pretty good with that hook.

Wai Lin: It comes from growing up in a rough neighborhood. You were pretty good on the bike.

James Bond: Well, that comes from not growing up at all.

Wai Lin: It's mostly dull routine, of course. But every now and then, you get to sail on a beautiful evening like this, and sometimes work with the decadent agent of a corrupt Western power.

James Bond: And they say Communists don't know how to have fun. And if I may say so, you've found the right decadent corrupt Western agent as a partner.

Elliot Carver: Let the mayhem begin.

Elliot Carver: Don't you realize how absurd your position is?

James Bond: No more absurd than starting a war for ratings.

James Bond: You forgot the first rule of mass media, Elliot; give the people what they want.

Mr. Stamper: I owe you an unpleasant death, Mr. Bond.

Wai Lin: They're looking for us, James.

James Bond: Let's stay under cover.
