Allies Quarrel – John Kitzmiller Quarrel is a Jamaican fisherman who assists James Bond on his mission against the evil Dr. No. He has already been working there with Felix Leiter and is wary of James Bond when they first meet. After formal introductions are given, the two become good friends. Quarrel is a very superstitious native of the island, especially of the dragon at Crab Key. He lends Bond all the information he has and accompanies Bond to the island late on night. They travel together once they team up with Honey Ryder. They encounter the ‘dragon’ at night, which turns out to be a tank dressed up to look like a vicious creature. During the shootout between Bond and the enemies, Quarrel gets too close, killed by the jet of fire that is shot out at him. Memorable lines: “You see, there’s a dragon!”
Felix Leiter – Jack Lord Felix Leiter is an American CIA agent who grew to become a great friend to James Bond. Working on many missions together, they proved to be helpful to one another. In Dr. No, they meet for the first time when Leiter holds Bond at gunpoint after his scuffle with Quarrel in the storage room. They each learn who the other is and begin discussing the Dr. No affair. Leiter accompanies Bond on the trip to Crab Key, but goes back half way. He arrives with his troops at the end of the film to see Bond and Honey enjoying eachother’s company in a lone boat on the ocean.
Pleydell-Smith – Louis Blaazer Pleydell-Smith is a high ranking official in Jamaica and welcomes Bond to the island when he arrives. They meet and discuss the Dr. No affair, and also the assassin which Bond disposed of on his way to meet with him. Bond later discovers Pleydell-Smith’s secretary, Miss Taro, is not all that she seems when he discovers her spying on them.
Villians
Dr. Julius No – Joseph Wiseman The main nemesis of James Bond in the first Eon film, Dr. No was a serious threat. As the unwanted child of a German mercenary and a Chinese woman, he went into working for various organizations. He eventually came to be a high ranking member of the evil SPECTRE organization, where he aimed his dangerous and sinister ideas against the world. His hands, due to dealing with radioactivity are steel. His plot is to attack US missiles fired from Cape Canaveral from his Crab Key base in Jamaica. This would then wreak havoc for the United State’s space program. His base itself was filled with many loyal guards who dared not to speak against him and worked conscientiously towards his goals. Memorable lines: “I never fail Mr. Bond.” “You are just a stupid policeman, whose luck has run out.”
Professor Dent – Anthony Dawson The nervous professor was a secretive spy/informer who worked for Dr. No. He is a geologist who knows many around the island and is regarded well by the locals. He helped to arrange the death of Strangways, as he hints to Bond in one of their conversations. He also is sent by the evil doctor to place a tarantula in Bond’s room, which he does, but the plan fails. Dent is finally killed at the end of Bond’s handgun, due to his poor judgment of bullets. Memorable lines: “He was killed, but never-mind how.”
Miss Taro – Zena Marshall Miss Taro is the shapely secretary for Pleydell-Smith, but she really works for Dr. No. She eavesdrops on the conversations Bond has with him and plans to kill Bond by luring him to her apartment one night. The plan fails when Bond figures her out and then sends her off in a police car, making sure they watch out for her nail varnish. Memorable lines: “My nail varnish…!”
Mr. Jones – Reginald Carter Mr. Jones is the cab driver that picks Bond up from the airport, secretly working for the enemy. He tries unsuccessfully to stop Bond, but is outsmarted. Rather than face Bond and the others, he commits suicide. Memorable lines: “I don’t know what you talking about, I was just sent here to meet you.”
Photographer – Margaret LeWars This dangerous beauty tries to catch a snapshot of Bond while at the airport, but only catches his hat. She then tries again at the club while Bond dines with Quarrel and Leiter. It’s a mistake on her part as Bond catches up with her and destroys the film. As she is a “little fish”, he sets her free, listening to her final warning against them. Memorable lines: “You’ll be sorry, you’ll all be sorry! You rats.”
Three Blind Mice These three men are the ones sent to assassinate Strangways, as well as his secretary, and collect the files on Dr. No and Crab Key. They also try later in the film to get a shot off at James Bond, but fail due to the civilians around.
Girls
Sylvia Trench – Eunice Gayson Officially the first Bond girl, Sylvia Trench meets James Bond while playing chemin de fer. They play across from eachother, both of them eyeing the other. Making her introduction to him as ‘Trench, Sylvia Trench,’ she inspired the classic Bond introduction back to her. She makes an appointment with him later, but shows up a bit too soon in his apartment wearing very little. Bond decides not to leave immediately when he sees her playing golf. Memorable lines: “I admire your luck, Mr..?”
Miss Taro – Zena Marshall Miss Taro works against James Bond. They meet ouside of Pleydell-Smith’s office and she invites him to her apartment. She works for SPECTRE and tries to have him killed, unsuccessfully. Bond later arranges for the police to pick her up, being careful of her nail varnish of course.
Honey Ryder – Ursula Andress Honey Ryder meets James Bond while coming out of the sea in a sexy bikini, innocently collecting shells and humming music. She is very wary of Bond at first, threatening to go for her knife at her side. They befriend eachother and work towards getting to Dr. No’s laboratory. She is later captured and almost drowned by Dr. No, but Bond rescues her in the end and they relax on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Memorable lines: “What are you doing here? Looking for shells?”
Gadgets
Walther PPK – (Dr. No – Tomorrow Never Dies) The Walther PPK is first issued to James Bond in Dr. No by Major Boothroyd, when his Beretta is taken away. It delivers shots like a brick through a plate-glass window and has excellent stopping power. It has saved the life of James Bond on many of his missions and has been used to stop several of his main adversaries. Bond has lost the PPK on numerous missions, always getting a new replacement from Q Branch. Professor Dent is the first unlucky victim of the powerful handgun in the famous scene in Dr. No. The Walther PPK is 7.65mm and carries six rounds.
Beretta – The Beretta was Bond’s weapon of choice at the beginning of Dr. No. While a lightweight gun, it had no stopping power and was referred to as a “lady’s handbag” type weapon. The Beretta had failed Bond on a previous mission, endangering the life of him. Because of that, M ordered a new gun, which was to become the Walther PPK. Bond did not want to part with the Beretta originally, but was forced to upon M’s orders.
Geiger Counter – James Bond has to request a Geiger counter from Britain to be delivered to him in Jamaica while on his mission. He later uses it to discover that samples from Crab Key were radioactive, casting suspicion on Dr. No.
Luminous Watch – Bond’s watch has a luminous dial which must be removed while he is using the Geiger counter to test for radiation later in the mission.
Quotes
Bond: I admire your courage Miss...? Bond: Moneypenny, what gives? M: If you carry a 00-number it means you have license to kill, not get killed. Bond: Both hands on the wheel, Mr. Jones, I'm a very nervous passenger. Leiter: That's Puss-Feller. He owns the place. Honey: What are you doing here, looking for shells? Honey: I put a black widow spider under his mosquito net. A female, they are
the worst. It took him a whole week to die. Did I do wrong? Bond: Tell me, does the toppling of American missiles really compensate for
having no hands? Bond: World domination. Same old dream. Our asylums are full of people who think they're Napoleon…or God.
