General Gogol is the KGB head of section and the opposite of M. He is often seen with his lovely secretary and takes an interest in several of the cases that James Bond works on as well. In The Spy Who Loved Me, he sends out Anya Amasova to locate the tracking device.

He works against James Bond in For Your Eyes Only when he tries to get the precious ATAC first. Bond throws it over the cliff, humorously alluding to détente between the two of them. In The Living Daylights, he arranges for Kara Milovy to travel as she wishes.

Villians

Hugo Drax – Michael Lonsdale

Hugo Drax is the main villain in Moonraker and the man behind the Moonraker shuttle. He is well regarded by all who know him and a very wealthy man. He meets James Bond at his chateau, and then orders some pain to be inflicted upon Bond.

He then later sends his henchman, Jaws, to kill him. Drax plans to destroy the population of Earth with his deadly gas globes from his station in Space and then put his new “super race” back on to Earth to start again. He will represent the order in Space looking down upon Earth.

Bond finally confronts him at the finale when things go awry, and fires a poison dart bullet into his chest, and then allowing him to take a giant leap into Outer Space.

Memorable lines:

“You’re not a sportsman Mr. Bond. Why did you break up the encounter with my pet python?”

“Look after Mr. Bond. See that some harm comes to him.”

“James Bond. You appear with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season.”

“You missed, Mr. Bond.”

“At least I shall have the pleasure of putting you out of my misery.”

Jaws – Richard Kiel

Jaws returns again to do battle with Bond, first taking him on after knocking him out of an airplane without a parachute on. He is later recruited by Drax and sent to kill Bond, which he cannot do.

He finds love in the much smaller Dolly and takes her into Space with Drax and the others. He switches sides to work with Bond when he figures how he and Dolly do not fit into Drax’s idea for ideal specimens of human life.

Along with Dolly, he is saved at the end of the film.

Memorable lines:

“Well, here’s to us.”

Chang – Toshiro Suga

Chang is assigned to bring some pain to Bond. He does so by putting him through the ride of his life on the powerful centrifuge trainer.

Later on in the film, Chang engages Bond in a glass shattering battle in a museum, Bond finally wins the fight by tossing him out of the window on the highest floor, into a piano.

Girls

Holly Goodhead – Lois Chiles

Holly Goodhead is a CIA agent who has also trained with NASA. She gives a very cold reception to James Bond when they first meet, and it takes considerable effort from him to finally get them on a more friendly level. She introduces and then later rescues Bond from the centrifuge trainer.

As they work on the same objective of investigating Drax, they eventually team up and go into outer space to find out exactly what Drax is up to. Surviving the ordeal, the two are seen in embrace in front of MI6 and other officials back on Earth.

Memorable lines:

“Your powers of observation do you credit Mr. Bond.”

“James, take me around the world one more time.”

Corinne Dufour – Corinne Clery

Corinne Dufour is the helicopter pilot that takes James Bond to the Hugo Drax estate. Beautiful and charming, she falls for Bond and doesn’t stop Bond when he later on finds the safe of Drax in his office.

As a result of Chang seeing this and reporting it to Drax, she is dismissed from his employment later and then cruelly killed by his pair of dogs in a vicious chase on Drax’s grounds.

Memorable lines:

“Welcome to California Mr. Bond.”

Manuela – Emily Bolton

Manuela is head of Section VH and meets Bond in his hotel room, preparing a Vodka Martini. After the two kill some time, they head down to the grand parade, making their way to the C& W plant.

After a close call with Jaws, Bond walks Manuela home, as he is done investigating the building.

Gadgets

Walther PPK – (Dr. No – Tomorrow Never Dies)

The Walther PPK is first issued to James Bond in Dr. No by Major Boothroyd, when his Beretta is taken away. It delivers shots like a brick through a plate-glass window and has excellent stopping power. It has saved the life of James Bond on many of his missions and has been used to stop several of his main adversaries.

Bond has lost the PPK on numerous missions, always getting a new replacement from Q Branch. Professor Dent is the first unlucky victim of the powerful handgun in the famous scene in Dr. No.

The Walther PPK is 7.65mm and carries six rounds.

Camera –

James Bond uses this small camera when investigating in Drax’s office. Complete with the ‘007’ label, he uses it to take pictures of the documents that were found in Drax’s hidden safe.

Seiko Watch –

James Bond’s Seiko watch comes in handy when hehas to make a quick escape with Holly Goodhead. He opens it up to reveal a small wire, which can be attached to an explosive. He blows open an escape hatch in the film, just saving him and Holly from the dangerous fire.

Wrist Gun –

This gadget is explained and given to Bond by Q early on in the film. Bond uses it several times later to save his life.

It is strapped onto his wrist, and can thus be concealed under a sleeve or jacket. It comes with five red and blue tipped darts. They are both armor-piercing and poison-tipped. The gadget is activated by any sudden nerve impulses from Bond’s wrist muscles.

Later in the film, Bond uses this to destroy the G-force centrifuge controls and to fire a dart into an unsuspecting Hugo Drax on the space station.

Moonraker Laser –

First demonstrated by Q’s technicians to an on looking James Bond, the Moonraker Laser is one of the prime weapons in the film.

During the climactic battle in space, both sides fighting in the battle use this laser which can be shot in space, emitting a bright blue/white glow.

CIA Equipment –

Many of Holly Goodhead’s gadgets are shown in the film when James Bond surprises her in the hotel late at night. They include: a flame throwing perfume bottle, a poison-tipped pen and a hidden transmitter concealed inside of her handbag.

After looking through these items, Bond comes to the conclusion that they are standard CIA equipment.

Quotes

Hostess Private Jet: Any higher, Mr. Bond, my ears will pop.

Miss Moneypenny: James, why are you so late?

James Bond: I fell out of an airplane without a parachute. Who's in there?

Miss Moneypenny: Q and the Minister of Defense.

James Bond: You don't believe me do you?

Q: It's activated by nerve impulses from the wrist muscles.

James Bond: Like this?

M: Oh, thank you, 007!

Q: Be careful, will you? Now, there's ten darts: five blue-tipped, armor-piercing; five red-tipped, cyanide coated, causing death in thirty seconds.

James Bond: Very novel, Q. Must get them in the stores for Christmas.

Corinne: Welcome to California, Mr. Bond.

James Bond: I like it already.

Corinne: The Drax residence. Every stone brought from France. Cute, isn't it?

James Bond: Magnificent. Why didn't he buy the Eiffel tower as well?

Corinne: He did, but the French government refused him an export permit.

Hugo Drax: Look after Mr. Bond. See that some harm comes to him.

Dr. Holly Goodhead: Come on, Mr. Bond. A 70-year-old can take 3 G's.

James Bond: Well, the trouble is there's never a 70-year-old around when you need one.

Hugo Drax: You missed, Mr. Bond.

James Bond: Did I?

James Bond: Oh, I suppose you're right. We would be better off working together. Détente?

Dr. Holly Goodhead: Agreed.

James Bond: Understanding?

Dr. Holly Goodhead: Possibly.

James Bond: Co-operation?

Dr. Holly Goodhead: Maybe.

James Bond: Trust?

Dr. Holly Goodhead: Out of the question.

Dr. Holly Goodhead: This evening I'm giving my address.

James Bond: Then can you think of a reason why we can't go for a drink afterwards?

Dr. Holly Goodhead: Not immediately. But I'm sure I shall.

Hugo Drax: Frederick Gray! What a surprise. And in distinguished company, all wearing gas masks. You must excuse me, gentlemen, not being English; I sometimes find your sense of humor rather difficult to follow.

James Bond: Play it again, Sam.

Dr. Holly Goodhead: You know him?

James Bond: Not socially. His name's Jaws, he kills people.

Hugo Drax: Mr. Bond, you persist in defying my efforts to provide an amusing death for you.

Hugo Drax: You're not a sportsman Mr. Bond. Why did you break up the encounter with my pet python?

James Bond: I discovered it had a crush on me.

Hugo Drax: James Bond. You appear with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season.

Hugo Drax: Allow me to introduce you to the airlock chamber. Observe, Mr. Bond, your route from this world to the next. And the treacherous Dr Goodhead; your desire to become America's first woman in space will shortly be fulfilled.

Hugo Drax: At least I shall have the pleasure of putting you out of my misery.

James Bond: Take a giant step for mankind.

Sir Frederick Gray: My God, what's Bond doing?

Q: I think he's attempting re-entry, sir.

Jaws: Well, here's to us.
