A View To A Kill [1985]

Allies

Achille Aubergine: Jean Rougerie

Aubergine is a French detective that meets James Bond for lunch at the Eiffel Tower in France. He discusses the knack for winning that Zorin seems to have with his horses, going over the possibility of drugs. Before he can give further information to Bond however, a well placed attack by May Day silences him.

Chuck Lee – David Yip

Chuck Lee is a CIA agent who meets James Bond at the fisherman’s wharf in San Francisco. He informs Bond on the past of Max Zorin, Carl Mortner, and the steroids connection. He later is present at Stacey’s house when they discuss Zorin’s next move. He is killed by May Day in his car when he prepares to leave.

Sir Godfrey Tibbett – Patrick Macnee

Sir Godfrey Tibbett is a horse racing expert who meets Bond while at the horse race where Zorin’s horse, Pegasus, makes an unbelievable win. He speaks with Bond and the others from MI6 present at the race about Zorin and the horses. Tibbett later poses as Bond’s chauffeur when he goes to Zorin’s estate. Tibbett is forced to carry a great deal of Bond’s luggage when they arrive up to his room.

Together, the two of them investigate the grounds late one night, taking on a pair of strong guards. Bond tells Tibbett to go to town to report, under the cover that the Rolls Royce needs to be washed. While at the car wash, May Day comes out of hiding in the back seat and strangles him.

Memorable lines:

“We’re on a mission.”

“Do we have to keep this up when we’re alone?”

Sir Frederick Gray-Minister of Defense – Geoffrey Keen

Sir Frederick Gray, who is first present in The Spy Who Loved Me, would often sit in on the briefings between James Bond and M. He is a high ranking Englishman who seems to always be concerned with the antics of James Bond and how it looks upon others. He is devastated when he shows up in a gas mask to Hugo Drax in Moonraker.

In Octopussy, he arranges for the precious jewels to be returned to General Gogol and then speaks with M about the disastrous attack on the MI6 safe-house in The Living Daylights.

Films: The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights.

Memorable lines:

“My God! What’s Bond doing?”

“I’ve never been so humiliated in my entire life! Your man should be taken off the assignment.”

Villians

General Alexis/Anatol Gogol – Walter Gotell

General Gogol is the KGB head of section and the opposite of M. He is often seen with his lovely secretary and takes an interest in several of the cases that James Bond works on as well. In The Spy Who Loved Me, he sends out Anya Amasova to locate the tracking device.

He works against James Bond in For Your Eyes Only when he tries to get the precious ATAC first. Bond throws it over the cliff, humorously alluding to détente between the two of them. In The Living Daylights, he arranges for Kara Milovy to travel as she wishes.

Max Zorin – Christopher Walken

Max Zorin is one of the most deranged villains in the James Bond series. A product of Steroid testing, Zorin is very intelligent, but also psychotic. He at once worked with the KGB, but no longer considers himself one of their agents.

His Main Strike project is to destroy Silicon Valley, which will then leave himself in control of a vast amount of the world’s microchips. His plan will cause the death of uncountable people and is a serious threat for 007.

He welcomes Bond to the chateau, and tries to kill him throughout the film. He also guns down his workers after a phase of the plan has been completed. He finally falls to his death after a grueling battle with Bond on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Memorable lines:

“If you're the best they've got, they're more likely try and cover up your embarrassing incompetence.”

“Then I’m about to make the same mistake twice.”

“You lost, 007!”

“That's rather neat, don't you think?”

May Day – Grace Jones

May Day is the chief henchwoman to Zorin. She gives an intimidating presence in the film with her dominating personality. She is the one that is chased by Bond on the Eiffel Tower and later on, kills Tibbett.

She loses her faith in Zorin when it becomes clear during the finale that he doesn’t care for her. Switching sides to help Bond, she lifts the bomb out of the mining pit. Giving her own life to insure that others are saved, she takes the bomb away from the explosives.

Memorable lines:

“Get Zorin for me!”

Scarpine – Patrick Bauchau

Scarpine is another one of Zorin’s head personnel. He welcomes James Bond to the chateau, and later keeps an eye on Bond, as the head of security.

Later on in the film, Scarpine flies the blimp that Bond hangs onto. At the finale, he dies in the explosion.

Dr. Carl Mortner (Hans Glau) – Willoughby Gray

Carl Mortner is Zorin’s breeding consultant that meets James Bond early on at the party. It is later revealed that his real name is Hans Glau and experimented with women in concentration camps, resulting in newborns that had phenomenal I.Q. levels, but were psychotic in nature, hence, Zorin.

He dies in the explosion of the blimp, after losing control when he sees Zorin fall to his death.

Bob Conley – Manning Redwood

Conley handles Max Zorin’s oil affairs, as he tells Bond when they meet at the bar at the party. He also is in control of the pumping stations. Conley is killed by Zorin in the mining sequence, when he and his men lose their usefulness.

Jenny Flex & Pan Ho – Allison Doody & Papillon Soo Soo

Jenny Flex and Pan Ho are the sidekicks to May Day. They both welcome James Bond to Zorin’s chateau, and are later present when he is captured after the horse race.

They are both killed in the mine, along with all the other workers as a result of Zorin’s insanity.

Memorable lines:

“Welcome. I’m Jenny Flex.”

Girls

Kimberley Jones – Mary Stavin

Kimberley Jones is an agent who awaits Bond in the covert iceberg during the pre-credits, when he returns from his mission. Telling her to set it on auto-pilot, Bond accelerates the boat, causing her to fall into his arms. They’ve got plenty of time as it’s five days to Alaska.

Memorable lines:

“Commander Bond!”

Stacey Sutton – Tanya Roberts

Stacey Sutton owns Sutton Oil, as her father died. She is seen by James Bond meeting with Zorin, as he gives her a check for five million dollars for her shares and to drop any lawsuit against him. She later declines this offer when he sends his men to help her make up her mind.

She is tricked a few times by the aliases of Bond, but eventually finds out who he really is, much to her surprise. He helps her throughout the latter section of the film, such as carrying her out of the burning building when Zorin traps them in it.

She is later caught by Zorin and thrown into the blimp. When it eventually crashes into the Golden Gate Bridge, she rushes out onto the bridge to take cover. Bond and Stacey are finally seen in the shower together by Q’s snooping gadget.

Memorable lines:

“Hmm, I never would have guessed.”

“I doubt that.”

Pola Ivanova – Fiona Fullerton

She is first seen taping Zorin as he speaks about Main Strike plan, she later runs into James Bond as the two make an escape away from pursuit by Zorin’s men. The two then later relax in a spa. She is a Russian agent, who works for the same purpose as Bond, but for a rival company.

She tries to get away secretly with the tape, but Bond outsmarts her. After, when she puts in the tape in Gogol’s presence, they are both flabbergasted with the results.

Memorable lines:

“The bubbles tickle my…Tchaikovsky!”

Gadgets

Walther PPK – (Dr. No – Tomorrow Never Dies)

The Walther PPK is first issued to James Bond in Dr. No by Major Boothroyd, when his Beretta is taken away. It delivers shots like a brick through a plate-glass window and has excellent stopping power. It has saved the life of James Bond on many of his missions and has been used to stop several of his main adversaries.

Bond has lost the PPK on numerous missions, always getting a new replacement from Q Branch. Professor Dent is the first unlucky victim of the powerful handgun in the famous scene in Dr. No.

The Walther PPK is 7.65mm and carries six rounds.

Snooper –

This remote controlled video surveillance “robot” is demonstrated by Q early on in the film.

He later uses it to find a live James Bond and Stacey Sutton showering together in her house, reporting back to headquarters that 007 is alive and just “cleaning up a few details.”

Camera Ring –

This indiscreet looking ring worn by James Bond at the party at Zorin’s chateau is actually a small camera. Bond uses this device to snap pictures of the mysterious Bob Conley and Carl Mortner.

Bug-Detector –

This small bug detector is hidden under the razor that James Bond brings along with him to his quarters at Zorin’s chateau.

Once inside his room, along with Tibbett, he searches and finds bugs hidden throughout with the help of this gadget.

Fountain Pen –

[Note: Deleted Scene]

This small innocent looking fountain pen is featured when James Bond is brought it and stripped of his Q Branch gadgets. Upon leaving, he signs out with the pen, only to reveal that the very letters he had written had burned into shreds seconds later.

Video Camera –

This hidden camera in Zorin’s main room is used to help him find the real identity of James St. John Smythe. While casually speaking of horses, Zorin soon discovers the real identity of the British agent.

Jenny Flex: Welcome, sir. I'm Jenny Flex.

James Bond: Of course you are.

James Bond: Well my dear, I take it you spend quite a lot of time in the saddle.

Jenny Flex: Yes, I love an early morning ride.

James Bond: Well, I'm an early riser myself.

James Bond: Sir Godfrey, on a mission, I am expected to sacrifice myself.

Max Zorin: I'm happiest, when I'm in the saddle.

James Bond: A fellow sportsman. Tell me, what about fishing, fly-casting?

James Bond: Hello. My name is James St. John Smythe. I'm English.

Stacey Sutton: I never would have guessed.

Max Zorin: You slept well?

James Bond: A little restless but I got off eventually.

James Bond: My department knows I'm here. When I don't report they'll retaliate.

Max Zorin: If you're the best they've got, they're more likely try and cover up your embarrassing incompetence.

James Bond: Don't count on it, Zorin.

Max Zorin: You amuse me, Mr. Bond.

James Bond: It's not mutual.

May Day: What a view...

Max Zorin: ...to a kill.

Howe: What have they done?

Max Zorin: You discharged her, so she and her accomplice came here to kill you. Then they set fire to the office, to conceal the crime but they were trapped in the elevator and perished in the flames.

Howe: But that means I would have to be...

Max Zorin: Dead!

Max Zorin: That's rather neat, don’t you think?

James Bond: Brilliant! I'm almost speechless with admiration.
